View Full Version : A 'Child' of the 60's or 70's?

What am I? In 1969 I was 12. Am I a 60's or 70's teen? Obama has an opinion of the timeframe, just not me. Personally I've already arrived at an answer. I and my cohorts were too young for Vietnam, but not too young to have been effected by it. We didn't participate, but had babysitters or neighbors that did.
For a 'boomer' like me, it meant those that decided that country meant more than security, they DID have a choice. Few in my neighborhood couldn't opt for college rather than draft.
One of my neighbors that timed us 'kids' running around the block graduated from Princeton then enlisted, in the Marines. He survived, went on to be a forest ranger, died in his 40's from a car accident. He'll always be a hero to me.
I remember at his funeral that one lady, she'd been a cafeteria server in the high school, recounted that every day he would give up his seat on the bus, so she could sit down. Of course this was before school buses forbade standees. He just did what was right, whether for an older person or a younger person, like us kids, running around the block.
I guess his parents educated him in deportment, even then, one couldn't credit the schools with that kind of behavior.

If you were too old or too young to understand the concept of "fashion" between about 1971 and into the 1980s count yourself lucky. I still have a lurid green bodyshirt from those days. What the hell were we thinking back then? :puke:

In 1969 I was 22. Was home from the army and got married. Trinity came along in 11 months later.
Howdy Doody came on every afternoon at 4 pm in the early 50's.
"It's howdy doody time, its howdy doody time." Is how the song went.

In 69 I was burning my draft card. Not that I could even enlist as I was 1-Y. Seems Gaffer is the only one older than I.

I feel so young after reading this thread.
So 33 is not so bad, eh.
When I was seventeen
It was a very good year
It was a very good year for small town girls
And soft summer nights
Wed hide from the lights
On the village green
When I was seventeen
When I was twenty-one
It was a very good year
It was a very good year for city girls
Who lived up the stair
With all that perfumed hair
And it came undone
When I was twenty-one
When I was thirty-five
It was a very good year
It was a very good year for blue-blooded girls
Of independent means
Wed ride in limousines
Their chauffeurs would drive
When I was thirty-five
But now the days grow short
Im in the autumn of the year
And now I think of my life as vintage wine
From fine old kegs
From the brim to the dregs
And it poured sweet and clear
It was a very good year
It was a mess of good years
Sinatra's version is still the best.
