U.S. officials are extremely concerned about a potentially major security breach after two alleged U.S. intelligence documents about Israel's preparations for an attack on Iran were published by a Telegram account affiliated with Iran.

Why it matters: The alleged leak comes as Israel completes weeks of preparations for a retaliation against Iran, which attacked Israel with a barrage of ballistic missiles on Oct. 1.

The leak could be an attempt to disrupt the Israeli operation.
The Pentagon and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment on the leaked documents, but did not dispute their authenticity.
Driving the news: A Telegram channel by the name "Middle East Spectator" claimed on Friday that it had received documents from a source in the U.S. intelligence community about Israel's preparations for an attack on Iran.

The Telegram channel routinely publishes pro-Iranian content, and the profile of the X account affiliated with the channel says it is located in Iran.
The documents include an alleged Visual Intelligence report by the Department of Defense National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) distributed inside the U.S. intelligence community earlier this week.
The authenticity of the documents has not been independently verified by Axios.
The alleged report details measures that have been carried out in recent days at several Israeli Air Force bases, including the transfer of advanced munitions which, according to the report, were intended for an attack on Iran.

It also states that according to U.S. signals intelligence, the Israeli Air Force conducted a large exercise this week involving intelligence planes and likely fighter jets trained for a possible attack against Iran.
The alleged intelligence report also detailed preparations in Israeli drone units for an attack against Iran.
Between the lines: The report, if accurate, would suggest very close and detailed surveillance by U.S. intelligence of Israel's preparations for an attack on Iran, including the use of satellites to spy on operations carried out at Israeli Air Force bases.

The potential leak could be the sign of very serious security breach within the U.S. intelligence community that resulted in top secret classified information reaching a Telegram channel affiliated with Iran.
What they're saying: A U.S. official told Axios that the alleged leak is extremely concerning, but that he doesn't believe it would influence Israel's operational plans against Iran.

A senior Israeli official said that the Israeli defense establishment is aware of the alleged leak and takes it very seriously.

There Appears to Have Been a Severe Intelligence Leak at the PentagonMatt Vespa

Iran launched a massive ballistic missile strike against Israel earlier this month. We’ve been waiting for how Israel will retaliate, reportedly a massive airstrike that will hit terror targets throughout the Middle East, Iran especially. With the 2024 election about to enter its final stages, there were reports that target packages were finalized, and it was only a matter of time before nothing came.

Well, as it turned out, there’s been a massive security leak. Whether these two events are linked is unknown, but it wouldn’t shock me if the reason for Jerusalem’s stalled attack were over their plans being leaked by someone at the Pentagon. Regardless, the larger story is that there’s been a massive breach of national security documents, and there are fears that more will be disclosed (via CNN):

The leak is “deeply concerning,” a US official told CNN.

The documents, dated October 15 and 16, began circulating online Friday after being posted on Telegram by an account called “Middle East Spectator.”

They are marked top secret and have markings indicating they are meant to be seen only by the US and its “Five Eyes” allies — Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

They describe preparations Israel appears to be making for a strike against Iran. One of the documents, which says it was compiled by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, says the plans involve Israel moving munitions around.

Another document says it is sourced to the National Security Agency and outlines Israeli air force exercises involving air-to-surface missiles, also believed to be in preparation for a strike on Iran. CNN is not quoting directly from or showing the documents.

A US official said the investigation is examining who had access to the alleged Pentagon document. Any such leak would automatically trigger an investigation by the FBI alongside the Pentagon and US intelligence agencies. The FBI declined to comment.

[…]

The National Security Council referred CNN to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Pentagon for comment. The Pentagon and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency declined to comment. CNN has reached out to the National Security Agency for comment.

Another US official said that “these two documents are bad, but not horrible. The concern is if there are more.”

“Bad, but not horrible” almost sounds like the line Soviet officials likely used regarding the radiation readings when Chernobyl exploded. It’s no wonder why Israel often goes alone regarding their anti-terror operations against Hamas operatives in Gaza: the Biden folks would leak it if it were shared, just like how these same people shared sensitive information with the Chinese about Russia’s Ukraine invasion plans, which Beijing then forwarded to Moscow.

Is it shocking? No, because as it’s been reported for quite some time, we have alleged Iranian spies in positions to catch such information:

Another mess for the Biden-Harris camp as we enter the final stretch here. It’s more distressing than any of the cocktail napkins and state dinner menus found at Mar-a-Lago.

This is a serious issue beyond the surface of leaking Top Secret classified info. We have allowed this undercurrent of Pali huggers to infiltrate all facets of our society, to include the military and its infrastructure. If they ever do find out where the leak occurred, my bet is on some self-sanctimonious, comm operator/courier believing their cause is more important than the oath-meaning more important than this country's national security.

Not for nothing, but our "leaders" (except 1) walking on charges of mishandling classified info hardly sets and example.

This possibly endangers our deployed troops. If they find the source, they need to hang it up by its thumbs with piano wire.

Find the leak. Make an example of the person. Like they did Walker in the 80s who's STILL behind bars. Going back to everything I have ever said on the topic, there's NO excuse for purposefully/willingly disclosing classified information.

If there is a silver lining, it's that thanks to the arrogance of the leak, it is exposed and Israel can always change plans. Just an idea, there's nothing in the rule book that says Israel has to do anything. Just saying it's gonna seems to work just fine :)

And Israel justified in misdirection of plans.

And Israel justified in misdirection of plans.Depends on the plan. If it involves US defense of Israel, they need to figure out a way to communicate that is more secure than what they're doing. They have means of comm that doesn't involve routine, daily classified traffic.

If the US is not involved, I see no reason to tell anyone.

Honestly at this point, I wouldn't put it past this admin to have leaked the info.

I would assume the admin leaked.

From what I read, it says the leak came from the Pentagon? That is the only reason I didn't start suspecting a "leak" from Israel accidentallyonpurpose :)

However, if those terrorist huggers are in our society, so too are they in the military/DoD.

Unfortunately, we are at their mercy for info. However, it should not be hard nor take that much time to identify a leak of TS info.
