Minus the sensationalist headline, the USS Tarawa was a decommissioned LHA that was sunk during RimPac exercises as the US and Pacific allies try out new weapons and such.

Mostly notable to me because it was the last ship I deployed on. C'est la vie.

The Tarawa (CV 40) was the ship my Da was on in WWIIThis USS Tarawa was LHA-1. Comparatively speaking, we had just returned on the USS Boxer (LHD-4), one of the newest in class at the time. Having been out previously on the USS Peleliu (LHA-5), I wasn't near as shocked as the troops. At least the boiler didn't break down on the Tarawa like it did on the Peleliu. In the middle of the Indian Ocean.
