Mexico Postpones U.S. Corn Ban
https://www.seedworld.com/us/2024/04/12/mexico-postpones-u-s-corn-ban/
Country officials cite production and food security concerns.
Mexico has been threatening to ban importing GMO corn since Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issued a decree In January 2021. Mexico had set a deadline of March 31, 2024 to enact the ban. That day came and went as Mexican officials decided to postpone the ban until 2025, citing concerns that it would threaten agricultural production and food security.
Some sources say the postponement will last until a replacement is found. The delay only kicks the can further down the road and leaves an air of uncertainty in its wake.
A U.S. corn ban could have significant impacts on the seed industry, particularly in terms of demand and supply dynamics. The ban could lead to reduced demand for genetically modified corn seeds, as Mexico is a major importer of U.S. corn. This might result in a shift in seed production priorities, with seed companies potentially focusing more on non-GM or alternative crop seeds to meet changing market needs. Additionally, the ban could prompt research and development efforts in the seed industry to create new varieties that comply with regulatory requirements and market preferences....
Is it right for the nation of Mexico to BAN the import of U.S. GMO corn?
Or other products for healthreasons?
Some stories mention that it's also to protect Mexico's farmers and promote the sales of their 50+ varieties of non-gmo corn INSIDe & outside of Mexico.
As I've mentioned before, I've got mixed (hypocritical) ideas about protectionism.
I think in some cases it is a tool that can be used against creeping monopoly.
And Big AG has spread like cancer creating patented GMO seeds that only grow 1 season and force farmers to buy new seed every year. keeping many on the edge of poverty.
In other cases the plants do produce seeds that work for more years but the planters have to pay patent fees or be fined. and if neighboring farms happen to gett a few plants in their fields, by accident or unknown means, the seed companies SUE the living Sht out of those farmers all over the world.
So, i don't have much sympathy for big AG here, I suspect they've pressured US congress to "do something" about this ban. And also lined the pockets of Mexican politicians to get this ban defeated... in the most "free market" ways available.

I haven't a problem with any country imposing their own standards for what enters their countries, the US does the same. No biggie, imo. Personally I look at GMO as something to consider on a case by case issue. I'm all for improving agriculture, making food more plentiful to prevent starvation. It really depends on what is being done.

GMO by definition from my understanding covers any process that involves the genetic materials of plant being manipulated. Thus crossing types of apples falls under GMO. Crossing apples and pears, which wouldn't happen in nature, also GMO. Making types of grains resistant to types of insects, rot/molds, etc., that wipe out whole crops, leading to starvation in third world, also GMO.
I'm sure there are frankenstein types of researching being done, that none of us would want part of, but I'm not for killing an industry that can save millions or more of peoples because of some bad actors.

Seems like the GMO bans are a bit simplistic given that every food we eat has been GMOed on some level.
This story is a bit dated but it doesn't seem to be a complete ban. My guess it's either protectionism wrapped up in a scientific argument or a nod to the enviros.
“Countries that are anti-GM also feed their animals GM feed,” says Spath. “It’s ironic that the countries that vote against approval of GM crops still import large amounts of GM ingredients for their animals.”

Yep, my take. Much like the green arguments, they purport to be 'science based,' but ignore the scientific method and go with the emotional arguments. Now that doesn't mean there aren't companies poisoning waterways or acting irresponsibly regarding the land or air, but punish them, not the people who will benefit.

I think the big deal for the Seed companies is that Mexico is a huge market.
Mexicans use corn in most of their foods. And It's my understanding the most of it comes from the U.S. at this point.

But what is old is new again.
CLAIM: A scientific study proved genetically modified corn isn’t safe to eat because it caused cancer in rats.AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The 2012 study cited by some social media users was retracted by the academic journal that originally published it, after the publication determined the research was inconclusive and unreliable. Food safety agencies in the U.S. and European Union have found genetically modified foods are just as safe as their non-modified counterparts, and experts told The Associated Press there is no credible evidence that genetically engineered corn is unsafe.
THE FACTS: Social media users in recent days have falsely claimed genetically modified corn isn’t safe because it’s been found to cause cancerous tumors and other health complications in rats.

Honestly, I was going to go on a tear like yesterday and bombard on GMOs and misinformation. Decided it definitely wasn't worth my time. This boils down to one side trying to use 'science' to enforce their version of Ludditism and they do not care about the advances that have helped and could further help mankind and the other side, which does acknowledge that whenever these types of programs are involved there can be inherent problems unintentional or worse.

FYI
Dr. Robert Kremer is a Professor of Soil Microbiology at the University of Missouri and is recently retired after a 32-year career as a microbiologist with the U.S.D.A. He spoke with Food Integrity Now about the problems he has studied over the past 18 years with transgenic crops (GMOs) and glyphosate. Glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp, is the most widely used herbicide in the world. Eighty percent of all GMO crops are engineered to tolerate Glyphosate....

Russia to begin more research on GMO crops.... but...
As recently as 2020, Vladimir Putin signed (https://apps.fas.usda.gov/newgainapi/api/Report/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=New%20Food%20Sec urity%20Doctrine%20Adopted_Moscow_Russian%20Federa tion_02-03-2020) into law the Food Security Doctrine, which banned import and distribution of GMOs for planting, and prohibited raising and breeding animals whose genetic code has been engineered. The only exception is the import and planting/breeding of GM crops for research purposes. It also allows for import of some GMO foods (like soybeans) for consumption....

That's what i posted 1st.
Seems you decided that take issue with their POV, assuming it was mine.
If you want to know what my links say, you can read them. As i mentioned before I'm not summarizing things for folks anymore.
Read it, make up your own mind what it says or doesn't.
But don't assume what i believe or dont believe about it.
Do you believe every word of every link you post?
Do they completely represent your POV?
My GENERAL stance on RoundUp ready GMOs is that, at best, we don't know if they are safe for consumption long term.
And that they are in fact bad for the ecosystem in general.
At worse they do cause a variety of health problems for many people.
But I don't trust Genetic Modifications beyond the cross pollination work thats been done for thousands of years.
And even there it's often produced less nutritious, weaker or even poisonous varieties.
The modern lab based Genetic Modifications artificially edits genes & or take genes from completely unrelated plants & animals to create frankenfoods.
I do not trust we know enough to say What these changes do down the line.
At the least, more study should be done.
You may disagree, which is fine, so please "trust the science", and enjoy your corn.

Caveat emptor applies to everything available or choices you make.
If I choose to drink a gallon of water every hour for foreseeable time, likely I'll be in medical emergency condition pretty dang quickly, including possible brain damage. That doesn't negate the body needs water to survive, quite a bit in fact for maximum performance. Got to know what science says about needs, performance, activities, etc.

waters been used for thousands of years. seems we've got a great scientific record with that correct?
We know how much is a problem and in what ways.
Some people have died from 1 vaccine. Can we say why one person has and another hasn't BEFORE we give them the shots?
Be good if studies were done to find out who are more susceptible & the true the effectiveness and the cross effects of them all.
Rather than taking it on faith that it's good for us in general ... like water.
Ivermectin and Hydrochorliquine are scientific interventions. I was ready to take those. They've been on the market for decades. Ivermectin been shown to be safer than Tylenol. But it was blocked by "science" for use.
Science should be honest and open about ALL the options available and ALL the Pros & Cons.
And people given their God given choice of what to do.
With our food, should folks be able to modify ALL our basic food & simply TELL US it's "safe" without decades of animal testing.
Is that to much of a request?
And yes Caner treatments are poisons, But notice they don't lie or gaslight about that.
And people have the choice & know what the risk are going in.
That's all folks are really asking for.

waters been used for thousands of years. seems we've got a great scientific record with that correct?
And people have the choice & know what's the risk are going in.
That's all folks are really asking for.
As I said, I have no issue with you and anyone else posting on this and any other 'science' issue to your heart's content. I just am not going to drive myself crazy trying to keep up with the deluge of videos, audios, 'studies', 'websites', memes...
Only so many minutes left on earth.

I don't think the masks had anything to do with science. It was done by decree/lie. Wear mask because commu... I mean Democrat governor says so. The lie was told by at least fauci, as his email indicates.
Those folks tossed all kinds of scientific studies at us to try and backup the mask BS.
Then they finally back tracked after they allowed folks to re-looked at the studies that had been around since the Spanish flu and a few new honest studies.

That' fine but don't say I'm against All scientific intervention.
Or assume you have all the best data if you won't look at other info.

I didn't mention you or anyone in particular. I said 'those types of threads.' Indeed, it sometimes seems as they are oppositional, just to be oppositional. Not that they are, that they seem.
