Are the walls closing in on Joe Biden? Another revelation from House Republican investigators further undermines the president’s longtime claims that he was never involved in his relatives’ various schemes to trade on his name.
A press release today from the office of House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R., Ky.) describes transactions related to one of Mr. Biden’s brothers:
In 2018, James Biden received $600,000 in loans from, Americore—a financially distressed and failing rural hospital operator. According to bankruptcy court documents, James Biden received these loans “based upon representations that his last name, ‘Biden,’ could ‘open doors’ and that he could obtain a large investment from the Middle East based on his political connections.”
On March 1, 2018, Americore wired a $200,000 loan into James and Sara Biden’s personal bank account – not their business bank account. On the same day, James Biden wrote a $200,000 check from this same personal bank account to Joe Biden.
The release includes an image of the check, which says that the $200,000 is for “loan repayment.”
Regular Journal readers may recall Americore from its appearance in a recent story on Biden family business from Annie Linskey and James Areddy. They reported last month:
James Biden’s famous name was offered as a legal shield when he partnered with Americore Health, a network of rural hospitals that proposed expanding the footprint of two small firms that developed a proprietary treatment model for addiction and mental health.
James Biden was among investors pushing for fast expansion, but as the venture bought up healthcare providers without receiving expected money from investors, meeting payroll became difficult and threats of lawsuits emerged, according to a lawsuit filed by the firms expecting investments.
“Don’t worry every time someone threatens to sue you,” Michael Lewitt, a James Biden associate, wrote to Michael Frey, the founder of one of the small firms, according to a 2019 text message between the two men. “You’re with us now nobody is gonna touch you.” Frey said it was his understanding that he and his company were “ ‘protected’ because of Jim Biden’s connections,” according to a 2019 lawsuit.
In response to Mr. Comer’s revelations today about the $200,000 check to Joe Biden written on the same day that James Biden received an identical amount from Americore, a statement provided by White House spokesperson Ian Sams says of House Republicans:
After rummaging through thousands of pages of a private citizen’s bank records, they have again turned up zero evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden – and that’s because there is none. President Biden didn’t do anything wrong. This entire exercise has become a self-debunking wild goose chase that’s only turning up evidence that President Biden did nothing wrong. House Republicans need to look in the mirror, realize there are real issues that need to be addressed in this country, elect a Speaker, get to work for the American people – and stop these silly political stunts.
