I'd vote against Jordan for nothing more than getting caught up in defending the stolen election line with zero evidence to back it up.

I would also do it to keep those trying to benefit from colluding with dems to get the Speaker fired for colluding with Dems. Gaetz is incidental to the act but not flying solo. The Freedom Caucus has shown me nothing that indicates it is mature, wise, and or intelligent enough to run the House. Quite the contrary, as a matter of fact.

Finding a Route Back to Sanity


The Republican Party’s extraordinary turmoil in 2023 in the wake of winning a majority in the House of Representatives last year brings to mind advice that has roots in the Bible and in every other major religion:


Treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself – the Golden Rule.


Jim Jordan has had a stellar career in Congress and despite this year’s turmoil, he has been an effective Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. Many believe he has the capacity to be a great House Speaker, in the mold of great Speaker’s before him, such as McCarthy or Gingrich.


Unfortunately, his bid is stalled and may have just failed. Some of his backers claim the “DC swamp” is doing him in, but the roots of his struggle are more prosaic and pedestrian:


No one likes a jerk, and it doesn’t take many jerks to spoil a party.


Jim Jordan (who’s a good guy) has ardent supporters who:


1) Refused to follow conference rules and opposed 90% of their colleagues to try to frustrate their first choice for Speaker;


2) Stopped bills from moving to the floor for consideration, despite being supported by an overwhelming majority of their colleagues, and then blamed the failure to move the same bills on others;


3) Joined with all Democrats to remove the Speaker chosen and supported by 96% of their colleagues; and


4) Refused to support the majority’s second choice (Steve Scalise) to be the new Speaker.


At the same time, and for quite some time, some of these members have tapped into and amplified the canard that their Republican colleagues (and their supporters) purposefully stymie the Republican Party from achieving its policy goals. They style as righteous reformers who will “crush” the “Republican Establishment” and drive out “Republicans In Name Only” (RINOs) who work with Democrats as a “Uniparty” in order to unleash “The People” and then, only then, roll-back the Democrats’ socialism and extreme social policies.


In this “RINO hunter” culture, chest-beating machismo is in, compromise is never a win and courtesy to Republicans who disagree is a sin (see, eg, Matthew Gaetz); it’s not an ethos conducive to good group dynamics.

The vast majority of Republican members are traditional conservative pragmatists who are willing to work with other Republicans and the occasional Democrat to pass laws that include compromises; think the Republican Party should be a “big tent” in order to win swing districts; espouse incremental change, if total victory remains out of reach; and think courtesy helps bridge differences.


A majority of the conference chose the estimable Jim Jordan as their third choice for Speaker, in part because he is seen as someone who could bridge this cultural divide within the party.


But, Mr. Jordan’s campaign has stalled, and may be over, because he is reaping what the RINO hunter culture has sown: discord and division. One can only hope that all Republican members are looking for a route back to sanity and that even the so-called Crazy 8 realize that removing the Republican’s chosen leader was political vandalism (or misplaced “courage”) that has hurt the conservative cause.


So, what to do?


The only viable route back to becoming a functioning majority again is to embrace neutral principles of governance over personalities, and the principles should be animated by the Golden Rule.


Senior members from across the spectrum need to lead by delivering an important joint message: RINO hunters need to tamp down on their game and everyone else needs to take a deep breath and get over their righteous anger.


Here are a few suggestions:


1) Refocus the conference on principles over personalities by pausing the Speaker election process to discuss the neutral principles and rules by which the conference should be governed:


2) Consider asking conference members to recommit to treating other members of the conference as they hope to be treated ,and recommit to majority rule, or perhaps some supermajority rule, within the conference, to the extent a good faith conscience permits; and


3) Without any prior nominations or further campaigning, conduct a secret poll in which each member identifies who he or she believes should be Speaker – and once a majority coalesces around an individual, draft that individual to become the conference Speaker candidate.


The only way House Republicans can move forward is in near unanimity, and the only way that will ever be possible is if the members recommit to treating each other with the same respect and decency that they expect in return. And then they need to act like Republicans, like people who believe in making a self-governing Republic work, and act on these principles.
