US scientists repeat fusion ignition breakthrough for 2nd time

Updated Sun, August 6, 2023 at 5:21 PM CDT
(Reuters) -U.S. scientists have achieved net energy gain in a fusion reaction for the second time since December, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory said on Sunday.
Scientists at the California-based lab repeated the fusion ignition breakthrough in an experiment in the National Ignition Facility (NIF) on July 30 that produced a higher energy yield than in December, a Lawrence Livermore spokesperson said.
Final results are still being analyzed, the spokesperson added.
Lawrence Livermore achieved a net energy gain in a fusion experiment using lasers on Dec. 5, 2022. The scientists focused a laser on a target of fuel to fuse two light atoms into a denser one, releasing the energy.
That experiment briefly achieved what's known as fusion ignition by generating 3.15 megajoules of energy output after the laser delivered 2.05 megajoules to the target, the Energy Department said.
In other words, it produced more energy from fusion than the laser energy used to drive it, the department said.
The Energy Department called it "a major scientific breakthrough decades in the making that will pave the way for advancements in national defense and the future of clean power."
Scientists have known for about a century that fusion powers the sun and have pursued developing fusion on Earth for decades. Such a breakthrough could one day help curb climate change if companies can scale up the technology to a commercial level in the coming decades.

Could end up being a fantastic breakthrough. Maybe an answer to the world's fuel crisis. --Tyr

There are some claims out of South Korea over the last couple of weeks that room temperature and single atmosphere superconductivity has been achieved as well, but that has yet to be checked and there is a lot of skepticism. Pretty exciting stuff if it all works out!

there is no fuel crisis.
it's a made up lie to justify a scarcity/mass murder mentality in humanity at large.
this is the evil of the enviro-liars, they're part of the nazi eugenics coalition.

Big oil/coal/gas would want it killed or radically slowed or control over it and the meters.
Watch reports start coming out from trusted sources saying that it's "too expensive" or "dangerous" in some way "not feasible" etc etc... OR
COMPLETE SILENCE.
People have been killed to keep or steal ham sandwiches, the energy corps won't close up shop without a real overt & covert struggle.
Personally i believe there are already several valid energy alternatives ...less exotic than fusion... that simply have not been allowed on the market. including plain old salt water.

I agree. Hydrogen being another simpler alternative.

Whatever energy source(s), it will be monopolized by whoever, and controlled by government. The green industry is selling fairy dust. At least fossil fuels are established as working with some efficiency.
Geothermal is another alternative that at east on paper appears efficient, less costly, and cleaner than other choices. It too has the issue of start-up cost and the time it takes to drill and set up production. Nobody wants to wait for anything even if it pays off long-term. Current energy producers cannot sell such long term ventures to investors.
I know little to nothing about nuclear energy besides the obvious dangers it presents when weaponized.

Goes back to vilification. The smear campaigns and fearmongering against nuclear power was over the top and not just by current industry. To the point that its effects still prejudice people's thinking.

these facts point to the truth.
the ptb (powers that be) don't want enough energy.
they'd rather orchestrate an ELE (extinction level event) about the issue.

No.Smoke and mirrors argument, depending on what numbers one uses.
If you take square mileage of the globe and divide it by population then it is not overpopulated.
If you take inhabitable areas and divide it by the population then it probably is.
If you take inhabited areas and divide it by the population it's disgustingly overpopulated.
If you take inhabited areas and match them against the ecological capacity to support, definitely overpopulated.
Just about anywhere there is are natural resources that support life on this planet there's a colony of Earthmen living like fireants.

I disagree with that statement. China and India are both overpopulated. It boils down to how one defines overpopulation, imho.
When you have tens of millions in your country BARELY living hand to mouth, you are overpopulated. When you have large numbers starving you are overpopulated.
Both of those countries have that. And I did no even name Africa! --Tyr

I believe in the ingenuity of man. Constant advancement has us feeding 8bb people in the world and besides global population is trending to peak at 10bbish between 2050 and 2100. And then decline. Plenty of countries and even continents are in decline already and the decline IMO is due to economic advancement.
I heard a stat awhile back that the entire population could live in TX, with a decent sized yard, leaving the rest of the globe for food production. I know you'll love your new neighbors.

Malthus would be astounded how many people are living on planet earth compared to his time and Ehrlich made a bet and lost in the 80's. They both might have changed their mind by now.

China is declining in population already and would like to reverse the trend and India would I think disagree with your statement. Africa's problem is a reliance on government which is generally the problem with starvation in the world.

Yes, capacity could support the world easily if properly managed, imho, it is government and culture in those starving populations in those nations.--Tyr

Now, once again, we're getting to how 'bad' Western Civ., i.e., America and cohorts are.
How about just coming out with what your economic solution is, beyond tariffs? I'm beginning to think the advocacy of such is just a warped attempt to get US to implement a self-destroying policy.

Never have, you or anyone else. You can come out and say, "I find capitalism immoral and also the worst possible economic system ever implemented." I would vehemently disagree, but could argue details and examples for months, if not years.
However, tariffs are not a solution to anything, they are a deterrent to trade.
If you're against any trade, come out with it.
