Do you think our enemies have learned from Ronald Reagans tactics and are trying to destroy us like we destroyed the Soviet Union? Would it work if they tried?
BTW Anyone ever stop to wonder what happened to all those communists? I cant imagine that one day they just disappeared.

No. The reason is that "you" didn't destroy the Soviet Union.
However, "you" could well destroy yourselves.

Yes, we can collapse as the Soviet Union did and yes, I fear we will. However, I doubt it will be because of our enemies on the outside. More likely, it will be because we did it to ourselves.
Every great civilization before us has collapsed eventually. I don't think we will be any different.

Our politicians are the ones destroying us and we the people are allowing it to happen by keeping them in office. If change is to happen, then it needs to start at the grass roots level.

If we continue to use money that has no value, and is worth absolutely nothing, it is an inevitability.

I have been trying to show that to Americans for years. It was a myth created by the right.Ronny deserves some credit but the man who really ended the cold war was Gorby. There are those who refuse to believe Ronny did not outspend the Russians and caused the collapse. Meeting Gorbachev was what got Ronny to react correctly to do what needed to be done to end the cold war.If it had been someone other than Gorby Ronny probably would have started WWIII. The world knows this but there is a faction of Americans who will NEVER see the truth of this time in history.

Great thread topic. I agree with Im here. Rome rotted away because it became too big, too decadent, too lazy, too hard to control, and too multicultural. There were provinces speaking languages nobody had ever heard of.
Sound familiar?

Have you forgotten perestroika and glasnost? Or has it been wiped from the official history of the US?
On the OP. No-one is trying to destroy the US. It would be counter-productive for the world. I have to admit I don't trust China. Sadly though it's almost as if Marx's predictions about capitalism having the seeds of its own destruction inside it is coming true. The West is gorging on China's industrial output. My country is selling huge natural resources to China and the "mining boom" is boosting our economy (and though I'm not economist for mine it's a bubble) while at the same time China is supporting some of the most anti-democratic regimes in the world. And China could destroy the US dollar tomorrow if it wished. That's a terrible thought.

Many know the real truth of the end of the cold war.Not all Americans bought into the hype.
Yes both our countries are selling our soul to China and Im affraid that some in this country do not care if we do. They are the ones running the show right now and are also making hand over fist profits. I really hope we can get a decent president this time.

Would love you to open a thread on your homeland. You have great ideas on the topography (and my photography :D) of this great land, what about yours?
I only ask given that you seem to have "us" all figured out and yet, your land is not so perfect, "eh."

Please---tell us how Ronnys' correct reaction to Gorbachev won it.
Ronny met Gorby in person and talked to him. In doing so he realised that Gorbachev was putting the SU on a completetly different path than privious SU leaders. It is ONLY in this country and no where else in the world where people give all the credit to Ronny. Lets remember who won the peace prize that year? Ronny was ready to escalate the cold war with Star Wars and near nuclear confrontations like the sub incident. He met Gorby and realised he was goig to change the SU and for that I will always be greatful to Ronny for. Ronny was willing to change and did the right thing.

Star Wars then and now is something in the future, and that was over 20 years ago. Get with it.
After edit* If you wish to say that Ronnie faked them out, ok. That's what was done. They realized that the US had the $$ to do so, though they seemed to have overestimated our ability.
US will never demize like the soviets.

They were already heading for broke and it was not nessesary. It was Gorby and his plans which changed the country.

Time frame is wrong. Gorby was the interpreter of Ronnie. Misunderstood what was reality and bluff.

How about a link that roughly comments on this viewpoint of history. :link:

Far from perfect here. Big land mass, very small population, huge amount of natural resources, we should be doing much better than we are but the incompetence of our federal government has taken us to this point.
But I was also responding to the OP in the clearest way I know and without malice. We're a bunch of hypocrites. We have been selling everything we can dig up to China in return for lots of money. We don't care that China is a repulsively totalitarian state that is supporting similar states around the world. We'll take money from anyone, even those who are are natural enemies and who wouldn't hesitate to cut us down if it suited their ends.

Kathy its true . The majority of the world credits Gorby as the person who did the most to end the cold war. I credit Ronny for seeing how Groby was different and reacting in the right way. The truth the rest of the world sees is that without Gorby no matter who was president at the time it would have continued. Gorby was the key. If it had been any ohter president and Gorby the war would have still ended. The world knows this but for some reason you dont. WHY?

A few more points.
1. The USSR is dead, but RUSSIA -- the nationalist core -- is alive and kicking. Russians are still around. And Russian nationalism is on the uptick.
2. The USSR was based on a socialist idea, and the multicultural idea that anyone can be the "Soviet man."
3. The USA today has come to based on the idea that any person can be an American, no matter the race, creed or color.
Class?

they had no money to sustain the cold war people were getting restless and less afraid of the kgb (they were starving) had they had a bank balance in proportion to the size of the place they would still be there
look at china slowly but surely embracing a capitalistic economy and exporting more and more every year there can be no comparison to any western capitalist democracy and the ussr
