Why the word 'freedom' is such a useful rallying cry for protesters
As demonstrations against COVID-19 restrictions continue across Canada, the word freedom is on the lips and placards of many protesters.
Often associated with protests and rallies in the United States, the term has taken hold among protesters who are part of the Freedom Convoy, which rolled into Ottawa in late January and has become entrenched in the city's downtown.
For many, freedom is a malleable term — one that's open to interpretation.
That flexibility, in part, has fuelled its growth among certain groups, said Barbara Perry, director of the Centre on Hate, Bias and Extremism at the Oshawa-based Ontario Tech University.
"It is a term that has resonated…. You can define it and understand it and sort of manipulate it in a way that makes sense to you and is useful to you, depending on your perspective," she told Cross Country Checkup.
It's also a term that has thrived among far-right groups, said Perry, one of a number of experts who say the presence of far-right groups in Canada is growing.

The ideal of "freedom" is as based in reality as "World Peace". Not if there are humanoids involved.

“You still have freedom of choice… you’ll just lose your job, your online presence and your bank account if you choose wrong.”

Can't even walk out the front door anymore without being on someone's camera.

Personally I never knew that "freedom" was intertwined with "whiteness",

And Gunny, I did know that ABSOLUTE freedom is unattainable.
I think everyone does.
But there is a REAL difference and reality to freedom over slavery.
financial freedom over poverty,
freedom to travel over arbitrary limitations and checkpoints and passports
freedom to choose where to how to treat your body, what to eat
freedom to teach your children, freedom to practice and speak openly about your faith anywhere.
etc etc etc..
freedoms that the maroity of american your age and older took for granted when you were a kid

no ones talking about ABSOLUTE freedom here, and its
counter productive to pretend anyone is.

It is "counterproductive" to fool yourself into believing you are losing something that was never more than an illusion. "Freedoms the majority of Americans my age took for granted when I was a kid"? Never taken them for granted and have mentioned more than twice over the years we were more free when I was a kid. I can even narrow it down for you -- technology/computers has been misused to take away a LOT of our "freedoms".

You are free to do none of what you listed. Each has consequences and rules, mostly from government. Consequence/rules = NOT "free".

You speak of comparative freedom which isn't freedom at all. Just an illusion.

Since you want to point a finger at "people my age" ... I served the ideal of this Nation and the freedoms we had only to come home and find people YOUR age took them for granted, and squandered or gave them away.
