After you dust off all the "smoke" (her way of explaining it), sounds like a panic attack to me. I get the panic attack thing. They suck. Not sure I would want to go for a Gold Medal on the World stage while I was just trying to breathe normally. Never had to. I have had to suck it up and get on with it though a time or two.
I don't get it. She's not just there for individual Gold, which her competing for that is still in the air, but as part of a team and she let the team down. This has to be the only country in the World where you can quit on your team, tell a sob story, and get all the usual voices on social media piling on the sympathy and calling it a "brave decision".
I'm going with an undecided, leaning toward not okay with the decision score on my card.

Greatest Of All Time. The GOAT debate is raging everywhere these days for some reason. Michael Jordan vs Lebron James. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic. I think almost everyone considered Biles to be the one but GOATs are clutch.

And Jordan Chiles, a 20-year-old from Vancouver, Washington, was unexpectedly up
thrown into the bars without any advance notice.
When I was told I had to put my grips on I was like, OMG, Chiles said of the wraps that gymnasts use on the uneven bars. Oh, great. This is it. Oh, man.
Then OMG she delivered a crisp, clean routine that judges awarded a 14.166, enough to keep the Americans on pace to win the silver medal they would.
https://sports.yahoo.com/gold-was-expected-but-winning-silver-is-remarkable-simone-biles-gymnastics-023849119.htmlI would have expected this of Biles. "You're up", "Oh fuck" and get on line.
As far as the greatest, I think it always is whoever it is at the moment, for the moment and few can be compared with one another. Too many nuances.

Simone Biles' decision to drop out of her event was more than just a random decision. When elite gymnasts performs complicated routines, it requires intense mental discipline. You are literally forcing your body to do things that your thought processes are telling you not to do. The slightest miscalculation can disrupt your timing and lead to a fall. Gymnasts have gotten seriously injured or even paralyzed by such. Gymnastics people refer to breaks in concentration as "the twisties." Excuses. Kerri Strugg had a legitimate injury everyone in the World saw, and every right to bow out. She stepped up.
You lefties have turned this this into a Nation of quitters full of excuses.

I just watched a video from Henry Cejudo. He's a dual champion UFC fighter and former Olympic judo gold medall winner from 2008. Says she needs a good kick in the ass, and basically stop the excuses. She sure loves the media and pressure if she wins tho. She is not a good teammate though, IMO.

Simone Biles (http://www.debatepolicy.com/showthread.php?73407-Simone-Biles-Drops-from-Team-Events-in-Olympics)is a member of team USA, if she wants to drop out of team competition just give her her "participation" trophy and send her snowflake ass home!

The "new English" scrub, prop, cleanse, omit and otherwise do away the emotion involved in competition, rendering the topic a cold, lifeless mechanical event to cover for weakness of will.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVXxfrTbfoI
From the beginning, just the fact that enough people made the comparison at all is a story. It's a story of will on one side and quitting on team the other. None of the revolving facts, figures and excuses in the video change that simple fact.
The narrator leans heavily on 2 facts: Strug's vault caused a career-ending injury to her ankle; and, the Russian botched her routine which meant Strug's performance was not necessary for the Gold. :smoke:
To the latter, no one knew that going in. The medal was up for grabs at the time of Strug's routine, end of story.
To the former, no one could have predicted that either. Strug was hurt. Everyone with at least one eye knew it. SHE knew it. She chose to suck it up and step up when she had EVERY legitimate reason and right to drop.
Whatever anyone else's opinion, letting down the team when you can still breathe and crawl offends the Marine in me above and beyond any excuse given.
Yet, US Gymnastics has been prefaced at every turn with "Since Simon Biles decided not to perform for mental health reasons ..." , overshadowing the successes of the US gymnasts who stepped up to the plate. If anyone deserves applause, I'd say it's the team members that had to fill the gap.
The story should be Jourdan Chiles stepped into Biles' spot with no notice and scored enough to earn a Silver Medal for the team. Sunisa Lee earned a Gold, and Mykayla Skinner earned a Silver in individual competition.
One thing Biles did do ...she made it all about her. The MSM is more guilty of this than the athlete. They can't say "US Women's Gymnastics" without saying "and Simon Biles who dropped out due to mental health reasons". The media has done it's best to turn the Olympics this year into a drama queen circus.

I think the first reason, "mental health" was trying to tie it to the reason of the day which seems to be a copout IMO. Then she had the "twisties" which I can completely understand being a reason to take yourself out for safety and team reasons. Just don't try to have it both ways.
Personally it seemed like her first few events she was so pumped up that her adrenaline had her overdoing things that she had a hard time controlling like going out of bounds on her floor exercise. Snowballed from there...

Winner.
"Most Clutch" definitely, but not GOAT. I'd have to agree with FJ, that Simone Biles was the GOAT before, but now she is not. Understandable if she had to withdraw because of a panic attack, but withdrawing from the team event in the middle of things is incompatible with the GOAT title.

A VERY DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE
Biles has been railroaded into publicly commenting on the Larry Nassar molester case . Her recent TV 'confession' of herself being a victim in that case was patently fake even to many of her adoring fans .
Perhaps Biles has had enough .
She is literally sick of the Intelligence agencies using the Olympics to push their Men-are-Pigs and Split-the-Sexes projects. They want women to fear and avoid men, since this helps the
governors sell anti-depressants, sex change operations, gym memberships, alcohol, weed, insurance, police, military, and a million other things. Splitting the sexes is a goldmine, since it requires a
million forms of compensation and protection. Happy couples spend far less across the board than split and miserable singles.
It seems that Simone is possibly signalling she needs to clear her conscience. She can't go on with the lies.
Perhaps one of two things will happen. She will tell the truth --- that no one was molested and pay the price for that, with Intel destroying her and her family; or she will keep it all inside, and it will eat her away slowly
.
She will then crash and burn in some awful fashion due to that. Neither alternative sounds too good, but surely the former is more advisable .
Speculation , but far from idle I suspect

Snowballed from there...I have become fascinated that this has taken on a life of its own. Obviously, I was not the only one to make the Biles - Strug comparison. Here I thought I was being original :) After thinking about it, I think it transcends talent and the two individuals. It's then vs now. Those of us old enough to remember the 96 Olympics and "us" in 96, vs this joke of an Olympics and "us" now.
In 96, the US was the most powerful Nation in the World. That was our team. They represented us. That's what they went out to do and that's what we expected. We were on the edge of our seats. What's she going to do? She had little time. She's trying to work off the shock and listening to her coach. When she toed the line there was dead silence. We expected the old college try but no way was she going to finish. When she stuck that landing you never saw a bunch of crazier Marines. That was our Nation. Our girl and she just stuck it to the commies on one freakin' leg. An American telling the World don't tell me what I can't do. I've rarely seen Marines get impressed by anything. Just not our style. Could have been better :) When Marines call a little civilian girl Hard Corps, she earned it.
2021: Half-ass Olympic team to begin with. Stars making excuses to not go. Not go to the Olympics if you have a chance? Our own athletes protesting our Nation on an international stage. Russia and China making a mockery of what should be fair competition.
The representative of "us", now, in front of the World, quits. The internet (I assume social media is worse) goes into overdrive making excuses and explaining away why it isn't what it is. IMO, Biles quitting represents the youth and everything wrong in this country now. When the going gets tough, they quit. 25-ish years ago that word wasn't in the vocabulary.
She didn't just quit on us. She quit on herself. Now she's got that monkey on her back. I wish her luck. Been my observation through the years that once someone quits, it's just easier to quit next time.

To put it another way, Simone pulled a "Bill Buckner".
Poor Bill had a long Hall-of-Fame-worthy career, but late in his career he made one error on the field that led to his team losing the World Series. From then on, all that anyone ever remembers about him is that error, not the rest of his career. And he never made the Hall of Fame, even though his stats are better than many people that are in it.
In some ways Simone is better than Bill, but in some ways worse. I have a feeling that her withdrawing in the middle of the competition is what people will most remember about her, more than how good she was in the last Olympics. We will see.

"The Second Coming"
Simone Biles nabbed a Bronze on the beam, behind 2 Chinese gymnasts. I'll refrain from acting like the Chinese and dogging her out for not pulling in Gold
Good on her. I'm all for getting back on the horse if it throws you. I have no personal animosity toward her and wish her the best. A good start would be deciding exactly what caused her to freeze. Been quite a few different stories FROM HER. Now, it was just the twisties. Okee-doke.
She sure gets a lot of media attention for someone who basically quit and didn't play. Her teammates, who IMO stepped up admirably, usually get a footnote at the bottom of a Simone Biles article. That's on the MSM, not the athlete.
