UPDATED 3:00 PM PT – Tuesday, July 20, 2021Republican lawmakers have looked to block China from purchasing more U.S. farmland. Earlier this month, Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) raised concerns that China was expanding its control over America’s food supply.
The Nebraska lawmaker proposed an amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations Bill that would prohibit Chinese-backed companies from buying farmland. He noted that the U.S. government has not and cannot purchase Chinese farmland.
“Can the America government go buy farm land in China? Can an American corporation buy farmland in china?” he questioned. “….I think the probability is about as close to zero as you can get. This issue is really one of fairness, but as the chairman has suggested, it’s also national security.”
Fortenberry went on to highlight the fact that China currently owns 200,000 acres of farmland in the U.S., which is worth $2 billion dollars.
