Actually, his voice records quite well. Did you know he produced, played and sang on an album with Loretta Lynn? They even won a grammy.

The thing that sets Jack White apart from many is that he's not as mechanical sounding as most and has a very raw sound, which many contemporary "blues" artists lack.

Actually his songs have more feeling to them than any other band I can think of today. Way more. They put passion into their music. Every performance is so unique:

Ya know Obama, they are the trendy little, and I do mean little, band of the moment for what, the next fifteen minutes. My best answer to you would be to show you one of my favorite guitarist, one who's career has spanned over forty years.

The first video shows a new, largely unknown band.....playing to over 500,000 people. Their drummer, Michael Shrieve is 19 at the time, one of the finest drummers ever.

I don't understand all the hatred. If there's any band keeping the classic rock sound alive, it's the White Stripes.

Plus, they've been around since 1999, and evolved drastically a few times, so they're going to be around for a lot longer than 15 minutes.

It's not hatred, it's pity for your generation's unfortunate luck of being stuck listening to some of the most amateurish crap ever played. From rap and hip hop to Dave Mathews supposed deepness.......a lot of garbage. But to be hip, to be considered cool, you are forced to like this shit. White Stripes are very bad at what they do and to think that they could get a recording contract while truely great musicians end up never being heard is didturbing. Jack has no rythum, no soul, no real talent.......just stating fact. There are a million guitarists around the world that could play circles around him and will never be heard because they don't have the right connections. I normally ignore such nobodies but had to state my opinion once obama elevated them to the status of his avatar.:cool:

If I may take this opportunity to recommend some very good music, check out Kenny Wayne Shepherd: 10 Days Out; Blues From The Backroads. Some of the best music I've heard in years.

The article mentions Clarence Gatemouth Brown, I saw him 25 years ago at Boo Boos Dance Hall in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana........ he was incredibly talented and hillarious as hell.

I agree about Carlos, I have always been amazed at how he is left out of great guitarist lists. He can put more feeling into a single sustained note than most do in an entire song.

I'm not a White Stripes fan. Nothing against them, just can't dig that style of theirs. I will admit that Jack is a pretty damn good guitarist though. With that said, he has a long road ahead of him to be considered amongst the elites such as "Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Stevie Ray, Santana..." But of course everyone's list will vary based on their taste.

Here's a guitar player you can "feel". Joe Satriani doesn't have vocals, almost all of his music is instrumental. When you listen to his guitar playing you can 'truly' feel it, IMO.

Simply misunderstood! some are talking playing ability while other are more or less going with current trends of the music scene. I have no doubt that Jack White is not the worst in history as he has already accomplished quite a bit but to claim him to be anywhere in sight of best guitarist is rediculous. Rate him for his writing ability is fine but to place him above accomplished players mentioned throughout this thread shows these polls are simply popularity contests. Rolling Stone magazine sucks anyway!

Jimi Hendrix, absolutely! The first few times I heard him playing it sounded like nothing more than distortion. Then I expanded my listening to other songs and realized just how good he was. I don't always base 'talent' on whether or not it's my style of music. Personally, I don't like the songs that Hendrix made, but I still say his one of the all time best. CC Deville was an awesome guitarist and never got the recognition he deserved because he played for an 80's 'hair band'. Steve Vai got recognition, but doesn't make the greatest players of all time because many feel he was a 'speed guitarist'. Everyone likes a different style of music but I still don't think that means a guitarist is bad or good. I'm not a big fan of the Blues, but I was in New Orleans a few years back and stumbled drunk into a few blues bars and heard some of the best playing I've ever heard before, from no name guys! Richie Sambora is another that never gets the credit due because everyone is too busy ogling at the singer.

I'm just a fan of music in general and am willing to give anything a try, and play over and over what I enjoy! While not a White Stripes fan, I admit to loving this song! (and hell, the video is pretty good too!)

Dicky Betts, writer of one of the finest songs ever recorded......In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed!
The live version with the intact Allman Brothers Band on "Live at Filmore East"...........doesn't get much better than that, all 13 minutes 0 seconds of it. Brings you through all emotions in one song.....nearly perfect, better than original recording. I saw them in Houston before Duane and Barry died, super night! Whipping Post is also a favorite. If you have ever been wronged in a relationship, you can't help but relate...... again every emotion, from the deepest sadness to the rebellious hatred to the hope of something new. Live at Filmore would be one of the albums I would choose to be stuck with on a deserted island along with 4 Way Street by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

I saw Crosby, Stills and Nash at Red Rocks near Denver around 1998, definitely in the top 5 concerts I have ever attended. They were soooo on that night. Even overweight and sucking oxygen between songs, Stills was all over the stage and his playing was flawless, Nash and Crosby had never sounded better and the incredible beauty of Red Rocks made it complete.

For any of you who have not had the pleasure of attending a concert at Red Rocks I strongly advise checking their schedual and pick a band that you would like to see and book it in advance, great thing to do when visiting Colorado. Then take a trip up I-70 and take the exit to Winter Park, follow that to Rocky Mountain National Park across into Estes Park, back through Boulder and on to Denver(take all day for this loop). Stop at the El Taco De Mexico at 6th and Santa Fe and have a Burrito Pastor smothered(don't miss one of these). Also, "Little Shanghai Chinese Restaurant" on Broadway has an amazing dish called Jalapeno Chicken, definitely get a bowl of their Hot and Sour soup to go with it.

The live version with the intact Allman Brothers Band on "Live at Filmore East"...........doesn't get much better than that, all 13 minutes 0 seconds of it. Brings you through all emotions in one song.....nearly perfect, better than original recording. I saw them in Houston before Duane and Barry died, super night! Whipping Post is also a favorite. If you have ever been wronged in a relationship, you can't help but relate...... again every emotion, from the deepest sadness to the rebellious hatred to the hope of something new. Live at Filmore would be one of the albums I would choose to be stuck with on a deserted island along with 4 Way Street by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

I saw Crosby, Stills and Nash at Red Rocks near Denver around 1998, definitely in the top 5 concerts I have ever attended. They were soooo on that night. Even overweight and sucking oxygen between songs, Stills was all an over the stage and his playing was flawless, Nash and Crosby had never sounded better and the incredible beauty of Red Rocks made it complete.


I can't say enough good things about Stephen Stills. I love his voice, guitar playing - everything. Never had the chance to see any of them perform, including Neil Young.

Red Rocks looks like a beautiful place to take in a festival. If I'm ever wealthy, I think one of the first things I'd do is take off for two or three months during the summer and attend every festival I can find!

If you go to Red Rocks, get there early. It's a killer hike from your car, it's all uphill and at over 6,000 feet, air is scarce. It's also a good idea to pack in a light weight goretex rain suit or at least a pancho because the weather is always unpredictable. That being said, it is an incredible place. I always tried to get a seat by the mixing board where the view was good and the sound was best.

I went to a double bill that featured Sarah McLachlan and The Chieftans, each played a seperate set and then McLachlan joined the Chieftans for the final set....... there was a steady, light rain through the last half of the concert and nobody even considered leaving. A truely magical evening. The Chieftans had guys that had been playing together for over 40 years and were outstanding, when Mclaughlan joined them it was complete.

There are a couple of DVDs that have been shot there that give you some idea what it's like.....Stevie Nicks and U-2, both are great videos.

Simply one of the best venues in the country. The sun sets behind the stage every night and you are overlooking the Columbia River Gorge.
