Is the court broken? Major emergencies that need immediate attention and changes? What is the reasoning behind thinking about increasing the numbers on the bench?

Trump had the timing and then the deaths of several members. As I said back then, there are consequences to elections and sometimes you also get the luck of the draw, or more like luck of death.

So now it's the Democrats time, and they may get options during their time with the office, yet to be seen. They haven't gotten the lock of the draw yet, and you never know if you will. But rather than taking that chance and maybe it not happening - they would like to simply bypass that - and just increase the numbers on the bench - of course to then install left leaning judges.

It's been 9 judges since 1869. - 1789 the court was established with 6 judges. The first change was an attempted change to 5 members, one reduction, but it didn't pass and stayed at 6. The numbers change from 6 to 7 to 8 to 9 to 10 due to population increases. This all took place between 1807-1863 when it was made 10. in 1866 it was determined that the next 3 members to croak would not be replaced, leaving the court at 7 members. Then in 1869 is was set at 9 justices, and stood for 152 years where it currently resides today. (Wiki)

There is no way that this should happen or that anyone could convince me that the court should be increased for the democrat reasoning - which is purely anger and pettiness at being at a disadvantage.

Biden unveils commission to study possible expansion of Supreme Court

President Biden created a bipartisan commission Friday to study structural changes to the Supreme Court, giving the group 180 days to produce a report on a range of thorny topics including court expansion and term limits.

The commission, composed of 36 legal scholars, former federal judges and practicing lawyers, fulfills Biden’s campaign promise to establish such a group after activists pushed him to back expanding the court following Republicans’ rush to confirm Justice Amy Coney Barrett shortly before last year’s election. Biden has said he is “not a fan” of adding seats to the Supreme Court, but he has declined to say whether he supports any other changes to its structure.

The commission, however, is likely to disappoint liberals who are looking for quick action to blunt the court’s conservative majority, while giving the president cover to avoid wading into the contentious debate. The members are not tasked with giving Biden specific recommendations but rather providing an analysis of a range of proposed changes to the court. The executive order establishing the commission mandates that the group hold public meetings and take input from a range of stakeholders, with the report expected in October.

“The topics it will examine include the genesis of the reform debate; the Court’s role in the Constitutional system; the length of service and turnover of justices on the Court; the membership and size of the Court; and the Court’s case selection, rules, and practice,” the White House said in a statement Friday.

President Donald Trump installed three justices on the Supreme Court, including Barrett, giving conservatives a 6-to-3 advantage for decades and triggering the liberal calls to expand the court.
