Back in the "day" it was common practice for lighthouses with large Fresnel lenses to use mercury baths as a low friction rotation mechanism.
The bad, well "swab" testing showed considerable accumulation of mercury on surfaces in the area of the mechanism as well as contamination throughout the house.
Keepers would often find small drops of mercury near the mechanism, sweep it up and put it back in (often coming in contact with it).
