Other than a hell of a lesson of losing children as a result, they need to be held responsible for the results. While I'm all for the 2nd and gun ownership and all of the above, a gun owner has responsibilities. And further responsibilities if you have children in the home. You must have your weapons and ammo locked up appropriately so that they cannot be accessed. Easily done and would always prevent tragedies like this.

Toddler Fatally Shoots 5-Year-Old Cousin While Playing With Gun

DETROIT (AP) — A 5-year-old boy has been fatally shot by his 18-month-old cousin who got hold of a handgun inside a westside Detroit home.

The toddler was playing with the gun about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when it discharged, striking the older boy in the neck, according to police.

A 27-year-old man was at the home at the time of the shooting and has been arrested. Police said he was father to the 5-year-old and uncle of the toddler. The boys’ grandmother and a 1-year-old girl also were at the home.

The shooting was “completely avoidable,” according to Tiffany Stewart, 10th Police Precinct commander.

“We lost another child in the city of Detroit due to a lack of firearm safety,” Stewart told reporters. “This is why we emphasize gun safety with gun locks and gun boxes so we don’t have circumstances like this.”

9-Year-Old Girl Dies After Shot In Head By 5-Year-Old Inside North Philadelphia Home, Police Say

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A 9-year-old girl was shot in the head and killed by a 5-year-old inside of a house in North Philadelphia Wednesday, police say. Police are now investigating what led up to her shooting.

A neighborhood has been left in shock after the young girl was shot and killed inside her home.

“We have to do better in terms of protecting our children from gun violence of all types,” Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said.

Philadelphia Police discovered the victim with a critical wound to the right side of her head around 11 a.m. inside of a home on the 2300 block of North Bouvier Street.

Medics were seen with a stretcher rushing from their ambulance.

The 9-year-old girl was home unattended at the time of the shooting, with two other children ages 5 and 12.

Police say they were alerted to the incident by the 12-year-old, who called 911.

The girl was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, two guns were recovered from the house.

“There were multiple weapons located within the residence and, at this time, we don’t know the legality of those weapons,” Philadelphia Police Cpl. Jasmine Reilly said.
