Due primarily to mismanagement by Brazilian autocrat Jair Bolsonaro, the state of Amazonas has been completely overwhelmed by Covid-19. Because Bolsonaro does not consider Covid-19 to be a major healthy crisis, needed supplies are either slow to arrive or nonexistent. There has been more than 6,000 deaths in Amazonas alone. There are estimates that as many as 25 percent of the population have been afflicted. --------------> https://www.france24.com/en/americas/20210115-short-of-oxygen-brazilian-city-of-manaus-forced-to-evacuate-covid-19-patients ----------------------------------->https://g1.globo.com/am/amazonas/

So 6,000 deaths in a 2019 population of 211 million. Undoubtedly higher population now....
Care to do the percentage?
A rough estimate in my head that is a death rate of .351 percent --less than one half of one percent.
And one could safely guess other serious and deadly disease factors are involved in that 6,000 number.
Factoring in the true death rate(OLD AGE-OTHER VERY SERIOUS CONTRIBUTING HEALTH ISSUES , ETC.) means the fatality rate is much lower than the .351 estimate..
So it is not the huge problem the media makes it out to be.
Was there any information given on the ages and other serious health issues involved with those that died??
Of course not-- that wouldnt do-- since the numbers are fudged to gin up ever greater fear.
People when in fear give up rights/freedoms far more easily. --Tyr

To understand the situation, you would have to read the story. It was about the effect of Covid-19 in the northern state of Amazonas (population 3.87 million), not the entire country of Brazil.

Well my friend, I tried to stick with the title.
The Title was, " Short of oxygen, Brazilian state overwhelmed by Covid-19 despite ferocious first wave""
Now that says --Brazilian state--surely that implies the entire region...
Or do you have information that the numbers only judged a small sector, n'est-ce pas? -Tyr

Since I figured only tailfins would recognize that Amazonas was a state in Brazil, I put "Brazilian state" in the title. But you should have read the story. It is quite heartbreaking and maddening.

I got that by reading this part--
"" needed supplies are either slow to arrive or nonexistent. ""
And that a great many deaths are heartbreaking. The virus is especially deadly to the old and the seriously ill.
Maddening even if one is so disposed.
Was the point that the leader there is indifferent and heartless?
If so, then I do not dispute that view.

It was actually a result of theft of by local officials causing a shortage of oxygen. If you have any doubt about the sources, notice that the TV Globo is prominently celebrating Nicolas Maduro "coming to the rescue". Other than the language, Rede Globo and granma.cu are nearly indistinguishable.

The alternative is the Socialist Workers Party. Bolsonaro is STILL popular in Brazil, his callousness serves the purpose to be stoic enough to show no mercy for gangs that make MS-13 look like kindergarten.

Bolsonaro is very popular with gangs and drug cartels. He takes kickbacks in return for looking the other way. Like Trump, Bolsonaro presents a macho persona while being indifferent to his country going down the toilet.

Obama had no regard for citizens of Mexico.
Operation Fast and Furious: Mr. Obama’s insane program to use American gun dealers and straw purchasers to arm Mexican drug lords so the administration could complain about lax regulations on American gun sales to restrict American Second Amendment constitutional rights. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent Jamie Zapata, plus hundreds of Mexican citizens, died as a result of the blotched operation
