Joe Biden Denies Calling for National Mask Mandate: ‘I’m a Constitutionalist’
Joe Biden backed off his proposed national mask mandate on Wednesday and now says he would “put pressure” on states, local units of government, and businesses to require them.
“No, no,” he said, denying he ever proposed such a thing, before claiming he would “ask every person in authority” to impose one.
“I’m a constitutionalist,” Biden declared. “You can’t do things the Constitution does allow you the power to do.”

Joe Biden Flip-flops on Shutting Down the Economy Again
Former Vice President Joe Biden backed away Wednesday from a recent pledge to shut down the entire U.S. economy again if advised to do so by experts, saying that he did not actually believe that would be necessary.
Last month, as Breitbart News reported, Biden said:
“I would shut it down; I would listen to the scientists,” Biden replied when asked by ABC’s World News Tonight anchor David Muir if he would shut down the country if experts proposed the measure.
“I will be prepared to do whatever it takes to save lives because we cannot get the country moving until we control the virus,” Biden, flanked by running mate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), said. “That is the fundamental flaw of this administration’s thinking to begin with. In order to keep the country running and moving and the economy growing, and people employed, you have to fix the virus, you have to deal with the virus.”
Biden’s remarks come one day after the former vice president pledged to implement a national mask mandate during his Democrat National Convention nomination acceptance speech. Days earlier, Biden said all Americans should wear masks “outside.”
“Let’s institute a mask mandate nationwide,” he proposed. “Every single American should be wearing a mask when they are outside for the next three months at a minimum.”

Fact Check: Joe Biden Claims He Called for Defense Production Act Before Trump
CLAIM: Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden suggested he was “the first” politician calling on President Trump to invoke the Defense Production Act (DPA) in response to the Chinese coronavirus crisis.
VERDICT: FALSE. Biden did not call for the DPA to be invoked until President Trump had already invoked the authority.
“When it got up to March, I kept saying, ‘Look, you’ve got to invoke’ — and you’ll remember, I think I was the first; I may be mistaken — person calling about the Defense Production Act,” Biden said during a campaign stop on Wednesday in Wilmington, Delaware.
“We don’t have enough of … it’s amazing we use a phrase like ‘PPE’ and the public knows what that is now, but protective equipment and gear and ventilators,” Biden said. “Use the authority to go out there now and don’t wait and don’t wait to talk about the need for us to have masks…”
Despite Biden’s claim, he was not the first politician to call for the DPA to be invoked, and he only suggested the action after Trump invoked the authority through executive order.
