Well, the reasoning behind "Wiener dog" is, they look like a hotdog, and here in America we call hotdogs wieners, as in Oscar Mayer wieners...

Aha. All is explained.
I have heard of 'Wiener', but it didn't make sense to me. A native of Vienna, living in the city they call 'Wien' ? And Wiener Schnitzel didn't make too much sense (?) ...
