Newt Gingrich: House Dems' Case to Impeach Trump Is 'Garbage'
The growing claims by Democrats that President Donald Trump should be considered guilty of "extortion" rather than orchestrating a "quid pro quo" with Ukraine shows how "carefully organized" the media and Democrats are, and that the case to impeach the president is "garbage," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday.
"The Democrats frankly are behaving in a way that is crazy," Gingrich commented on Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
"Historians will look back, they will say this whole case was totally made up."
He added that investigative journalist Lee Smith's book, "The Plot Against the President" shows "exactly" what happened and that the case against Trump has been "orchestrated by left-wingers" in the bureaucracy, the House, and the media
"All of this is garbage ... [This is] like the Salem witch trials," said Gingrich. "There is nothing here. Presidents who want to find the truth have every right to say to a foreign government, will you help me get to the truth. That is what Trump was doing."
Trump tweeted early Tuesday that he'll release the transcript of his first "more important" telephone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy by week's end. Gingrich said that's because Trump wants to make the case that he's consistently dealt with Ukraine better than former President Barack Obama did.
He said he also thinks Trump is "sort of frustrated" with the idea that former Vice President Joe Biden's son Hunter could go to Ukraine and make millions, but "nobody is supposed to be allowed to find out whether or not it was corrupt."
"Joe Biden can go off and threaten to take away a billion dollars in aid to Ukraine, and nobody is allowed to question whether or not it was corrupt, but any word that President Trump uses is somehow suspect," said Gingrich.
