As if things weren't bad enough for the beleagured GOPs. Now an incumbent congressman has died, opening up another seat and an opportunity for the Dems.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Ohio Rep. Paul Gillmor was found dead in his apartment Wednesday, a Republican leadership aide said.
The aide said the body of the 68-year-old Republican was found by staff members who went to his apartment after he failed to show up for work. There was no immediate word on the cause of his death. Gillmor's office did not respond to a reporter's call.
Gillmor, who represented Ohio's 5th District in the Bowling Green area of the state, was first elected to Congress in 1988.
The aide spoke on condition of anonymity pending an official announcement.
Gillmor, who served as a judge advocate in the Air Force after graduating law school, won a seat in the Ohio state senate in 1966, and served there for 22 years, rising to the senate presidency. After an unsuccessful run for governor in 1986, Gillmor was elected to the U.S. House in 1988 after eking out a 27-vote victory in the primary.
As a House member was a little-known but solid Republican vote, and a reliable conservative on social issues.
He led legislative efforts in such areas as cleanups of commercially contaminated sites known as brownfields and enacting financial service reforms. He was also a strong advocate of a constitutional amendment to ban unfunded mandates on the states.

What a disgusting post...
Instead of wondering what happened to the poor guy, or feeling sorry for their family...They are celebrating because it could mean a seat for their political party...I feel like I'm reading something right off of Duunderground...

I would think ANY American would have better things to think about when hearing this rather an "open seat". Most would feel sad, sympathy for the family and have a desire for understanding of his death. The fact that you see it as an "opportunity" is appalling.
Reading his statement with a grain of intelligence leads you to understand that there was no "celebration" whatsoever.
Speaking of intelligence, anyone with comprehension skills would see that an interest in an "open seat" is being opportunistic for a political advantage, which is a little too close to a celebration for my liking.

Nothing he said was incorrect or celebratory.
It is an opportunity for the Democrats, just like when people when Tim Johnson went into the hospital after the midterm election it was an opportunity for Republicans.

Yes, it was, and I would have scolded any republican here that jumped to speak about that before feeling the sadness of losing an American serving our country.
When you immediately look to the positive advantage democrats might get out of someone's death, to me that is a type of celebration. Out of all the ways one could possibly gain political advantage, or a seat, this would be the last anyone should want to see. And to hear someone IMMEDIATELY think of that when someone passes away is disgusting.

That's just shitty and untrue. I felt bad when Johnson got sick and I actually sent a get well card to his office. I never thought if something happened to him then we would have another seat, that is just wrong on so many levels. Just because their views are completly messed up doesn't mean we wish them dead, far from it actually.
Oh yea and if this is such a good thing for Democrats why are the Democratic Congressmen and Senators putting out emails in support of Gilmor?

A Dem would of had an "opportunity" to get the seat the next time the seat is up for election, whether he is alive or not, running for re-election or not.
Besides, its not like another Dim or two in the senate will change anything, they already have a majority in Congress and are still completely inept and worthless. And that won't change even if Hitlery becomes Prez too.

AMEN, Stripey. Seems like some folks around here have forgotten the meaning of what goes around comes around. Tell ya one thing, losing a seat in Congress that the Dem's will pick up in 08 is going to be the least of the Repub's and conservative's worries. Wait until the economy crashes and we're at war and under attack because of the past and current policies and legislation enacted by the Republican "Christian" right. That's when the ass-kickin's are really gonna start.

I think it has something to do with the new voting machines, the ones delivered with democrat votes already recorded.
I'm not absolutely sure but I believe in Ohio the governor has to appoint a rep from the same party as the former rep. But I believe there is some leeway there as well. Like a dem could be put in if a repub gets another position to balance out somewhere. But in this case I think it will be a repub period.

The question should be this: will America vote for a party split between Congress and the Whitehouse in 2008? Since the Democrats currently hold Congress and are likely to retain both Houses in 2008, will the American people be more deferential to a Republican candidate in order to force a "stalemate" as such between the branches of government?
The reason I think this particular question is pertinent is because neither party is doing very well in approval polls, and I see the potential for America voting for a "status quo" government.

As I said elsewhere, the reason the "family values" business is going to bite the GOP in the ass next year is that they've run on that issue for years.
They've said, in effect, "Vote for us because we're not a bunch of immoral, adulerous jerks and homos like the Democrats."
Well, it turns out that they are. Somebody wipe the egg off their GOP faces.
The Democrats, on the other hand, have never tried to portray themselves as other than they are....a bunch of immoral, adulterous jerks and homosexuals.
When the voters discover they've been sold a bill of goods, it tends to piss them off.

i think your middle of the roader, the centrist, and the libertarian, may think this way, but most dems, even the dems that crossed over, and got Bush elected, will never vote for a republican president again! At least, that is what the callers on c-span's washington journal have said....and i am certain that this is an exageration on their part, but not for this 2008 election.
if the democrats did hold the house and ALSO got the 60 senate seats needed to get anything passed in the senate, i could live with a divided gvt, and a ''moderate'' republican president..... but not without the 60 senate seat guarantee!
the ideal situation for republicans would be a divided gvt, but i do not believe it will happen....it will probably be clinton, being sworn in 1/20/2009, the way things are looking....unless bloomberg and hagel hook up as independents, and give her a run for the money imho....

Excellent points, CSOB, remind me to rep you for them...
IMO... The reason Congress has such a low approval rating now is because of republican obstructionists... the dems can't stop the war because they NEED 17 republicans to jump ship to override bush's inevitable veto of any bill having a troop PHASED withdrawal date... and they just don't have them...
It seems obvious to me that it's the Republicans that would rather keep our troops in Iraq until hell freezes over... but then, I pay better attention than most americans.

LOL, and have you heard Hitlery PROMISE she will end the war? NOPE. Make no mistake, she will continue it.
Lets get something straight about B.J., he didn't just do one or two acts of 'indescrestions', ever since he was a governor he went after women. Funny how libs these days have totally forgotten about Paula Jones and the many other women who complained about Clinton sexually harrassing them. He clearly has a history of cheating and most women would leave and should leave a situation like that. But we all know why she stayed with him....because she cares a hell of a lot more about the political power she would lose if she divorced B.J.
Sure someone like Craig is a hypocrit if he is a fag. But so are all these liberals who defend B.J. Clinton when at the same time there supposed to be all about 'womens rights'.

So? Whereas it is certainly wrong for a married man to seek sexual encounters with other women, it is really none of your concern what the wife does in response to those dalliances, now is it? Divorce? Maybe... maybe not... maybe she loves the guy... have you asked her?

stephanie: That is one issue where I disagree with Hillary. She favors staying in Iraq to try and clean up the mess Bush has created. I favor getting out today. I do not believe our presence there is accomplishing anything. I believe the result will be the same whether we leave tomorrow or in 5 years. The only difference will be more dead Americans.
I also believe the Iraq occupation has greatly increased enmity for the US in the Muslim world. We will not begin to undo the damage we have done to our image until we disengage from Iraq. As long as we are there, we serve as a recruiting poster for al qaida and other radical Islamist groups.

Odd, I can recall the Republican majority making the same claim of the Democrat minority who "obstructed" the will of the bare majority. What it boils down to for the Democrats is that the extreme fringe element of the Democrat constituency which helped vote the Democrats into power are now majorly pissed that the Democrats DIDN'T shut down the war effort by holding off funding, or even making the token effort of "de-authorizing" the war.
BTW, it's this kind of "balance" that the Democrats were saying was so absolutely necessary over the years where the GOP controlled majorities in both Houses of Congress and the Whitehouse. Of course when the opportunity presents itself to re-establish such a balance, now the Democrats want to assert "total power." I'm certain any poster who wanted could find talk about Republican fascism during the time they controlled the two elected branches of our Federal government. Not saying that you did, Stripes, as I can't recall specificalyl that you did. But such statements were made by the former Democrat minority, and now that there is an opportunity for the Democrats to gain control of the elected branches such talk is easily forgotten. Politics is power; and, power corrupts.
I guess what I'm pointing out is that the Democrats and Republicans are essentially the same - both are power-brokers and panderers to the masses.
It seems obvious to me that it's the Republicans that would rather keep our troops in Iraq until hell freezes over... but then, I pay better attention than most americans.
Didn't pay good enough attention to catch the facts that we normally discuss citizens of the USA as Americans rather than "americans." (Sorry, couldn't let the jab pass, you know how it goes....)
And what may be "obvious" to you may not be obvious to others. I'd even go so far as to say that what is "obvious" to you is in fact a distortion based on your own preconceptions. Not a damnable thing to be sure, but we all have to remember that our perspectives beget our realities.

I really don't know what you're argueing about any more. The original comments I replied to were about the people running for President and the issues they'd run on. Why would any of the current Republican candidates have any connection to Craig's actions? Just because Craig is a closet fag that means all of us conservatives have to cower in a corner for the next election? His actions do not speak for our values, so he has no bearing on what issues will dominate the election for us conservatives.
Hitlery on the other hand, is DIRECTLY connected to BJ. And I am not just talking about the his cheating and sexual harrasment suits. Clinton had a history of corruption and a horrible legacy as a President, from Whitewater to pardoning all of his criminal friends/business partners to failed 'Hillary Care' to his fuck ups in handling the Islamic terror threat. Thats why I say people will laugh at her on the way to the polls come election day.

It doesn't matter who the next president is the US will continue to have a presence in Iraq for many years.
Do you understand that most of the hatred for the US in the Muslim world is because of our meddling in the Middle East?
A basic difference between Republicans and Democrats is that the Repubs think we have a right to tear down nations in the Middle east, or build them up, or replace heads of state as we see fit.
What gives us the right, other than the fact that we have more war toys than anybody else?
Yes, we should disengage entirely from the Middle East. The Middle East has its own dynamics and issues to work out, e.g., the Sunni vs. Shiite business, and the problem many countries have with Israel.
We should disengage from the Middle East and let events there run their own course. That would remove the major raison d'etre of Al Qaida and other America-hating radical groups.
As for Israel, it has shown it can more than hold its own. Let Israel stand or fall on its own merits.

You think Craig is the only closeted homosexual in the GOP?
So in your mind, it is better to divorce the offending spouse thus destryoing the family than forgive them and go on from there?
