In the American media, every other story concerning professional sports centers around steroids or drug use. Which athletes use steroids? Who was arrested for drug use? The coverage is everywhere.
The big story in the Australian media this week is a Melbourne TV station accusing two athletes of using drugs. The results was 80,000 viewers switching to another station and league players and officials shunning the station's reporters.

It's turned into a huge fight. The AFL, the commercial outfit that wants to be like the NFL, is spitting chips over this. They have a three strikes policy which some say is soft on drugs. Channel 7 in Melbourne purchased some stolen info on two football players who were accused of using recreational drugs and all hell has broken loose. The AFL is not only spitting chips, it's spitting the dummy. Everyone is calling foul on Channel 7 because they purchased stolen property and then put the info to air. They didn't name the players or the team (to my knowledge) and there is an injunction against broadcast of that info. It's all a huge cover-up. But that's in line with out society I'm sad to say.
The difference is for the most part that you in the US have an open society while we, in Australia, have a partially closed society.

So reporting "stolen" info is the real reason people are mad at the TV station- not because they reported the drug use, per se? The original post was a tad misleading, then.
