Five years almost to the day before President Donald Trump’s border officers blocked migrants with tear gas, authorities under President Barack Obama used identical tactics along the same stretch of border near the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to 2013 press accounts.

The incident occurred about a quarter-mile west of the San Ysidro border crossing in the Tijuana River channel. No one was seriously injured, no shots were fired and no arrests were made, said Mary Beth Caston, a Border Patrol spokeswoman.

The group first approached a lone agent stationed about 1/8 of a mile north of the border. They ignored his commands to stop, so he fired pepper balls to try to stop them and protect himself, Caston said.

As the crowd kept advancing and throwing rocks and bottles, she said, more agents came to the scene and used other “intermediate use-of-force devices” to push back the group. The agents also contacted Mexican law enforcement.

In 2018, on November 25, border officers used tear gas to drive migrants back from a border fence they were seeking to push through.

Democrats are hammering the Trump administration for using tear gas to deter migrants who are rushing the southern border, but the Obama administration used similar tactics in 2013.

U.S. and Mexico border agents deployed tear gas against migrants in Tijuana after the migrants threw rocks at agents and tried to storm the border to gain illegal entry into the United States.

Democratic Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz deleted a tweet comparing the tear gas to chemical weapons but later accused Border Patrol of specifically spraying children with the gas. Some women and children were affected by the gas because it spreads quickly, but there is no evidence to suggest Border Patrol specifically targeted families.

Qasim Rashid compared the use of tear gas to authoritarian regimes who used lethal gas on their own citizens.

Border agents: rock throwing migrants pushed women and children to front of horde

Border patrol unleashed tear gas and pepper balls to disperse the crowd of migrants trying to cross the border in Tijuana, Mexico on Sunday. According to San Diego Chief Border Patrol Agent Rodney Scott, agents did not use dispersion techniques until after migrants had struck several agents with projectiles.

“Several agents were actually struck by rocks,” Scott said, before revealing that the migrants pushed women and children to the front of their group to discourage agents from responding to rock-throwing with force.

“What we saw over and over yesterday was that the group — the caravan, as we call them — would push women and children to the front and then begin, basically, rocking our agents,” Scott asserted.

Scott further explained that agents did not target women and children with gas, but that “once that chemical is released, it does go through the air.”

Border patrol agent says what prompted the use of tear gas at US-Mexican border

Rodney Scott, the chief U.S. Border Patrol agent of San Diego, outlined the circumstances Monday morning that led to law enforcement utilizing tear gas at the United States-Mexican border.

CNN host John Berman began the interview with Scott simply by asking, “explain the use of tear gas.”

Scott responded by saying that the main responsibility of Border Patrol is ensuring that “the border is safe and secure.”

The leading officer went on to challenge the notion that the migrants storming the border were part of a “peaceful protest” or that the “majority of these people were claiming asylum.”

Scott then candidly outlined the apparently raucous scene at the border, which ended with the deployment of tear gas.

“Similarly to what we saw the first wave of the caravan came up a week or so ago, the group immediately started throwing rocks and debris at our agents, taunting the agents,” Scott said. “Once our agents were assaulted, and the numbers started growing, we had two or three agents at a time initially facing hundreds of people at a time, they deployed tear gas to protect themselves and to protect the border.”

He went on to add that three agents were actually struck with rocks and some military vehicles were severely dented. None of the injuries were serious, according to Scott.

Here are the choices that the border patrol had when the mob began to storm the border gates:
1. Use tear gas or pepper spray
2. Use physical violence
3. Do nothing and allow a mob of 5000 people illegally enter the country and melt into the city of San Diego

The Dem morons might imagine there was some 4th choice, but there wasn't. Its easy to Dem chuckleheads to suggest other choices when they're sitting in a comfortable studio chair, blathering away on the Rachel Maddow show. Not so easy is you are actually a Border Patrol agent doing an actual j-o-b like enforcing our country's border.

One other thing - if the mob had not been stopped by tear gas, they probably would have physically harmed the Border Patrol agents as they surged through, not to mention some of the civilians waiting at the border. And the final result would have been 10 more caravans forming up in 6 different Central American countries. You either have borders or you don't.
