Trump limits asylum, says people must 'come in legally'
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Friday invoked extraordinary national security powers to deny asylum to migrants who enter the country illegally, tightening the border as caravans of Central Americans slowly approach the United States.
Trump is using the same powers he used to push through a version of the travel ban that was upheld by the Supreme Court. The proclamation puts into place regulations adopted Thursday that circumvent laws stating that anyone is eligible for asylum no matter how he or she enters the country.
"We need people in our country but they have to come in legally and they have to have merit," Trump said Friday as he prepared to depart for Paris.
Administration officials say the measures are in effect for at least three months, but could be extended. They go into effect Saturday and don't affect people who are already in the country.
The changes are meant to funnel asylum seekers through official border crossings for speedy rulings, officials said, instead of having them try to circumvent such crossings on the nearly 2,000-mile (3,200-kilometer) border.

Well... somebody get word to the invasion headed this way. They're coming here for nothing. Best just turn around and go home.
Sorry, Soros, you just blew another couple million on nothing.

Feinstein urged Obama to use Presidential power to limit immigration: 'No legislation necessary'
--Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California encouraged then-President Barack Obama to use broad presidential powers to tighten immigration rules in response to a wave of migration from Central America in 2014.
--In a letter to Obama, Feinstein cited the same statutory authority that President Donald Trump invoked to make illegal border-crossers ineligible for asylum.
--That authority comes from Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows the president to “impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”
Democratic California Sen. Dianne Feinstein encouraged then-President Barack Obama to use the “very broad power” granted to him by Congress to limit immigration in any way he saw fit, according to a letter obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
Feinstein sent the letter to Obama in July 2014, in the midst of an unprecedented surge in illegal immigration by family units and unaccompanied minors, mostly from Central America, across the southwest border.
In her note, Feinstein referred to Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which grants the president the authority to “suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”
The statute gave Obama wide latitude to issue new regulations concerning the entry and detention of migrants, Feinstein wrote, including limiting deportation appeal rights and keeping children in the custody of immigration authorities rather than transferring them to the Department of Health and Human Services.
“It therefore appears that no legislation is necessary to give your administration the tools it needs to respond to this crisis, and that any needed temporary measures can be implemented through presidential action,” Feinstein concluded.
