I always thought the expression was "Holy Smoke!", like a reference to the burning bush or something like that, but lately I've heard a number of people at work or on TV saying "Holy smokes" like there talking about a pack of cigarettes. Which one is the original saying? Just curious.

I'm somehow not seeing my Winston's as being blessed :)

Holy Smoke might be a reference to the Bible's Flaming bush...

But lots of debate on it: https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/1565/what-is-the-origin-of-holy-smoke
