UPDATED 7:49 AM PT — Mon. March 26, 2018A missing’s person’s case takes a tragic turn for law enforcement officials in Texas after several reports of abuse and a possible arranged (http://www.oann.com/iraqi-parents-charged-for-abusing-teen-over-arranged-marriage-denial/#) marriage.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Department arrested 34-year-old Abdulah al Hishmawi and his wife Friday on family violence charges.
They are accused of choking, beating and pouring hot cooking oil on their daughter for refusing to cooperate with her parents wishes for an arranged marriage with an older man.
“This young lady, at various times over that time period was subjected to some pretty bad abuse, because she didn’t want to be married to this person,” explained Javier Salazar of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department.”Several times it was reported to us that this young lady was abused with hot cooking oil being thrown on her body, she was beat with broomsticks, at least at one point, she was choked almost to the point of unconsciousness, and it’s really heart breaking to hear.”
The parents were allegedly set to receive $20,000 in exchange for the minor.
The threat of the alleged abuse and the impending wedding prompted the girl to run away.
She was later found and placed in the custody of Child Protective Services with her five younger siblings.
“Thankfully we were able to find her safe and sound and now she is in CPS custody along with, I believe, five other siblings that were in the home that are also in CPS custody,” said Salazar. “Those other young siblings are between the ages 5 and 15 years of age..we don’t know if those other siblings are victims of any abuse.”
While authorities believe the parents could face additional charges, they say it is unlikely the would-be groom will be charged as well.
