The good news is, all four quadruplets are breathing easily and doing well. The bad news is, when the couple contacted the hospital in Canada's socialized medical care system, they were told that there would be no room for them in the delivery rooms.

It is not known if they were asked to go on a waiting list to deliver their babies.

They did the smart thing, and drove 300 miles to the United States where Hillary's nationalized health care scheme had been defeated. The delivery then went well.

Canadian Woman Gives Birth to Rare Identical Quadruplets

Friday, August 17, 2007

HELENA, Mont. — A 35-year-old Canadian woman has given birth to rare identical quadruplets, hospital officials said Thursday.

Karen Jepp of Calgary, Alberta, delivered Autumn, Brooke, Calissa and Dahlia by Caesarian section Sunday afternoon at Benefis Healthcare Hospital in Great Falls, Montana, said Amy Astin, the hospital's director of community and government relations.

The four girls were breathing without ventilators and listed in good condition Thursday, Astin said.

"These babies are doing grand," said Dr. Tom Key, the perinatologist who delivered the girls.

The babies were born about two months early and were conceived without fertility drugs, he said. They weighed between 2.6 pounds (1.18 kilograms) and 2.15 pounds (0.98 kilograms).

Jepp and her husband, J.P., declined to be interviewed by The Associated Press.

The couple also have a 2-year-old son, Simon.

J.P. Jepp works for Shell Oil Co., and both parents worked for nonprofit groups until recently, Astin said.

The chances of giving birth to identical quadruplets is about one in 13 million, Key said.

"This is a very big medical event," he said. "Identical quadruplets are extremely rare."

Medical literature indicates there are less than 50 sets of identical quadruplets, said Dr. Jamie Grifo, director of the NYU Fertility Center in New York.

The last reported set were born in April 2006 to a 26-year-old Indian woman.

The Jepps drove 325 miles (523 kilometers) to Great Falls for the births because hospitals in Calgary were at capacity, Key said.

Two of the girls were to be transferred to a Calgary hospital later Thursday. The other two could be moved Friday if their conditions remain favorable, Key said.

They will likely remain hospitalized for four to six weeks, he said.

Do Canadian hospitals give out free corks?

You have to wonder, would a chastity belt work in reverse?

O, Canada....!!

Coming soon to a health care system near YOU, if Hillary gets elected. Then where will all those Canadians go for decent health care?

Well currently they all head south for the winter. Lugging their x-rays films and reports with them. Man it must be an awesome system up there.

When I lived in Florida we used to joke that the last one out of Canada had to turn out the lights.

Apparently they couldn't build a new hospital in time for the lady to give birth, so they flew her to the hospital in Montana. Not the first time

Karen Jepp had her girls in Montana because Foothills Medical Centre NICU in Calgary was over-capacity. It's a recurring problem for the booming city -- this year, at least five women have been sent to Benefis to give birth.

There are 89 neonatal beds in Calgary. The city's Health Region has the budget for more, but would still need additional staff to watch over them. And officials said they've had a difficult time hiring more doctors and nurses.

It cost $30,000 for each day Karen Jepp and her babies received care in the Montana hospital. In Calgary, it would have cost less than $11,000 per day.

Don't rely on Fox, they get the facts wrong so many times they're now a caricature of themselves.

Yep turns out that bolded part by the OP was actually a LIE. They were FLOWN there and they didnt drive. It wouldnt make any sense for a high risk woman in labor to be DRIVING that far or seek a hospital that she would have to PAY herself. It seems as if it is Canada who is paying for it.

Lets also remember that fox went to court and asserted it was LEGAL for them to lie and the courts agreed! I certainly wouldnt trust a source that asserts it has a LEGAL RIGHT TO LIE and can fire employees for insubordination for refusing to lie.

Don't blame that AP story on FOX..... Notice the headline says "Associated Press" - that means the AP wrote that story.... many news agencies run AP stories ..

FoxFiction? :laugh2: "Ve haff vays of making you lie!" :laugh2:

I like this bit from the story:

It cost $30,000 for each day Karen Jepp and her babies received care in the Montana hospital. In Calgary, it would have cost less than $11,000 per day.

Now know Alberta is rolling along nicely thanks to its natural resources (Ralph Klein even gave everyone a little cash gift before he left office) but it's obvious that the boom isn't just in shale oil. Heck I heard a radio programme about the cost and difficulty of renting in Fort McMurray, but even a wealthy province like Alta. can't throw up public buildings in a few days.

It's strange how the story was really about the rarity of identical quads but our resident right wing ideologues spun it to attack the health system above the 49th Parallel. Well tough blokes, check out the costs. Now if I were you I'd high-tail it up to Canada to that foot fixed, yeah, the one you just shot :laugh2:

Having lived in Calgary for half my life, I would expect that the demand for hospital beds etc would exceed the supply given that the population has EXPLODED over the last 5 yrs. Try finding a place to live in Calgary, you're chances of getting a bed in a hospital are probably better. Canada is a fairly transient society, there is a major econmic boom going on in Alberta, and that's the place to be if you want to make some big money fast.

We had the same problem here a few years ago. City facilities and housing markets aren't equiped to handle a massive influx of people in a short period of time.
