"The U.S.S. Carl Vinson is set to arrive in Vietnam for a historic visi (http://www.oann.com/aircraft-carrier-u-s-s-carl-vinson-to-visit-vietnam-with-a-message-to-china/#) in response to China’s growing presence in the South China Sea.
http://d2pggiv3o55wnc.cloudfront.net/oann/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/AP18064355450111.jpgUSS Carl Vinson is anchored at Tien Sa Port in Danang, Vietnam, Monday, March 5, 2018. For the first time since the Vietnam War, the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier is paying a visit to a Vietnamese port (http://www.oann.com/aircraft-carrier-u-s-s-carl-vinson-to-visit-vietnam-with-a-message-to-china/#), seeking to bolster both countries’ efforts to stem expansionism by China in the South China Sea. The nuclear-powered vessel will arrive in the port of Da Nang, reflecting the deepening military ties between Hanoi and Washington.
Around 5,500 sailors will set foot on vietnamese soil in the first visit by an American aircraft carrier since the v\Vietnam war.
This comes as China has been building militarized artificial islands across the South China Sea, stirring concern among regional U.S. allies.
The Carl Vinson strike group (http://www.oann.com/aircraft-carrier-u-s-s-carl-vinson-to-visit-vietnam-with-a-message-to-china/#) will begin its four day port call in Da Nang Monday."

THAT's what I'm talking about. Some REAL "diplomacy".

In 1983. I was stationed aboard the USS Dahlgren, and we were deployed in the Med.
We were joined by the VINSON in the Med, that was there to replace the USS Coral Sea CVS-43 on it's final deployment before decomissioning.
I took this picture from the Dahlgren....

OH... don't want to PISS OFF THE CHINESE... that might start a TRADE WAR... ... [/sarcasm-off]
Ya know, when I sell something, I always ask for more than what I'll take, and I think that's what president Trump does. It leaves plenty of room for negotiation in our favor.

Sometimes doing what you'd like to do isn't worth the price you end up paying for doing it.
The US pulling port call in Vietnam says a couple of things to me. Vietnam is afraid of China expansion, who occupied Vietnam for centuries. More afraid of China than us.
We're making it clear that man-made islands or no, we're driving our boats right through the South China Sea whether or not you like it. Just too bad we don't have any commissioned battleships left. I'd send it as escort.

I thought an aircraft carrier always traveled with escort ships... shows ya what I know about the Navy...
But I don't think the chinese give a rats behind about our saber rattling. They'l continue to build islands regardless.

Our escorts now are every bit as deadly but they don't invoke the sheer pants-pissing fear like the USS Missouri. They see that coming and run.

Best part about the Missouri, was the Steven Seagal movie, "Under Siege," when Erika Eleniak pops out of that cake... :coffee:
One of the hottest babes that's ever walked the face of the earth in my opinion. Kind of off topic, but WORTH MENTIONING... :2up:

"Battleship" was better than "Under Siege" ;)

It is a grand old ship. I'd love to someday tour it.
Course I'd like to see the QE2 moored in Long Beach too, but I'll be damned if I ever step foot in kullyfornia again.

I have seen the Vinson and was amazed at the size. Our 210 foot cutter looked like a Captain's Gig in comparison.
Out doing boat drills, I pulled alongside the Missouri in our 6 meter RHI.
The barrels of those 16" guns were longer than our boat! Talk about feeling tiny!

By the time they turned it into a museum my interests in Pearl didn't have ANYTHING to do with touring any more boats. I had a date with a dozen Corona's and a beach :) Which beach didn't matter either. Preferably Wakiki because the motel lobbies opened onto the beach and the bars were right inside on the patio.

I missed this one.
Called a 'Carrier Battle Group'. They will not be alone.

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/kamilo-beach-hawaii-dirtiest-beach-america_us_58e99a38e4b05413bfe3792dGuess that answers one question I always had. Once we're 10 miles from shore, it's on. You put all your trashin different bags on the ship and they get periodically dumped overboard. I always wondered if every ship has done that for as long as ships have used these sea lines, just how much BS is in the ocean?
I don't like it at all. Same time, that's one of those things you can hardly do anything about. I'm sure the left would say we need to quit using ships  I wouldn't want to be stuckon board with 6 months worth of trash just so they could bury it in the ground instead.

Probably the EDITED version though. You have to get the bluray to get the good out of the movie, if you know what I mean... ;)

High_Plains. Normally, when on station, patrolling their theater of ops. Carriers are always escorted. The problem is, when crossing the BIG PONDS, like the Atlantic, or Pacific. The carrier tends to OUTRUN all escorts, except the guided missile destroyers who always claim...their ACTUAL POTENTIAL SPEEDS are Classified, just like the Carriers. You decide. Our carriers can leave San Diego, Ca. and be in Japan 7 Days later.
I'll let you do the math...if you want. :)

I'll let you do the math...if you want. :)I know THAT story. When we'd go out MEU/ARG, we had and LHA-D, LPD and an LSD. At any given time we could be shadowed by 1-3 destroyers, a sub, always had an UnRep ship I never bothered to figure out where it came from. We may or may not fall in with a Carrier Task Force. We'd rarely be in sight of anything but our 3 ships. We had backup Air Force support in Diego Garcia and Bahrain.
So, if you was a bad guy and wanted to come play, you just never knew who might show up to share the "fun". But consider this .... the LHD has Harriers for fixed wing aircraft, if they even use them anymore. They are ground support aircraft, not fighters. Kinda makes one wonder just how far away from the big deck with the FA-18s we wandered. IF one was smart :halo9:

Speeds are Classified!! Are you navigating direct line, or full circle?
It makes one hell of a difference

It makes one hell of a differenceI didn't know that. I never knew what speed we were going anyway. Fast or slow. I left the boat to those that knew how to run it. I was just along for the ride. :)

Direct line navigation and position estimates are good for short distances. Like drawing on a flat scene.
Great circle routes are more like drawing on a ball, more accurate than the other for great distances.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_circleI knew that much. I just didn't know ship's speed was classified. I also did not know whether we were taking a direct or circuitous route. WESTPAC itself is circuitous. I know we never got anywhere late, especially liberty ports

I've never been a QM, and not much of a navigator at all. But I am only repeating what most people are told when they ask..."What is the top speed of this ship?"
Truth is. The Nuclear powered carriers really are potentially faster than advertised. As for direct line, or circle. Obviously...whoever is the navigator, would be choosing the most DIRECT, and FASTEST route. Much different when traveling across the World's largest ocean...like the Pacific.
So...you can ask yourself that question.

I had to learn navigation as a Boatswain's mate that had to plot out navigation.
Short distances point to point are easy.
When I got into Command Centers and had to plot Great Circle routes,
found them to be much more accurate when you are talking hundreds, or thousands
of miles.
Gave those figures to big Cutters, Navy assets, and HC-130 crews.
