Triumphant Trump celebrates tax win _ but some fear backlash

WASHINGTON (AP) — A triumphant President Donald Trump and jubilant fellow Republicans celebrated the passage of their $1.5 trillion tax overhaul Wednesday as a “historic victory for the American people.” The American people, however, will need some convincing.

As Trump and GOP lawmakers gathered at the White House to cheer their first major legislative achievement — and the biggest tax changes in a generation — some Republicans warned that the party could face a painful political backlash against an overhaul that offers corporations and wealthy taxpayers the biggest benefits and triggers the loss of health care coverage for millions of Americans.

There was no hint of anxiety at the White House, though, as the president and congressional Republicans pushed any qualms aside and reveled in a much-needed win at the end of a year marked by GOP infighting and political stumbles.

“We are making America great again,” Trump declared, personally thanking his “little team” of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, before lawmakers lavished praise upon a president they have often openly criticized.

“I don’t know if we’ll have bigger moments, but we hope to,” said Trump.

Congress votes to open Alaska refuge to oil drilling

Congress voted Wednesday to open Alaska’s remote Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil and natural gas drilling, ending more than four decades of heated debate on the matter.

The House voted 224-201, mostly along party lines, to pass the Republicans’ tax overhaul bill, which has the ANWR drilling provision attached to it.

It followed the Senate’s 51-48 vote along party lines early Wednesday morning to pass the bill. The House had passed it earlier Tuesday as well, before the GOP had to make small changes to comply with rules allowing for a 51-vote passage in the Senate as a budget reconciliation measure.

No Democrats voted for the bill on Tuesday, and only 12 House Republicans voted against it.

AT&T, Comcast giving $1,000 bonuses to hundreds of thousands of workers after tax bill

AT&T is paying bonuses of $1,000 to more than 200,000 U.S. employees.
AT&T's CEO said it was in response to tax reform.
The House of Representatives on Wednesday sent tax reform legislation to President Donald Trump, who is expected to sign it soon.

Telecom giant AT&T was quick to respond to news of U.S. tax reform, announcing it would give some employees bonuses once the legislation is signed into law.

AT&T said in a press release Wednesday that it would give more than 200,000 of its U.S. workers who are union members a special bonus of $1,000. The company also increased its capital expenditures budget by $1 billion in the U.S.

"Congress, working closely with the President, took a monumental step to bring taxes paid by U.S. businesses in line with the rest of the industrialized world," CEO Randall Stephenson said in a statement. "This tax reform will drive economic growth and create good-paying jobs. In fact, we will increase our U.S. investment and pay a special bonus to our U.S. employees."

Wells Fargo, Fifth Third Bancorp unveil minimum wage hikes after tax bill passage

Fifth Third and AT&T are paying employees special bonuses after getting tax cuts under the Republican tax plan.
Wells Fargo said Wednesday that it would boost minimum wages for employees to $15 an hour, following Fifth Third's similar announcement.

Fifth Third Bancorp will pay more than 13,500 employees a bonus and raise the minimum wage of its workforce to $15 an hour after the passage of the Republican tax plan that will cut the bank's corporate tax rate.

Fifth Third is yet another company to announce a bonus for employees because of the tax plan. AT&T said earlier Wednesday that it would pay more than 200,000 U.S. employees $1,000 each and increase its capital spending budget by $1 billion.

Wells Fargo, meanwhile, also said it would be boosting its minimum wage for employees to $15 an hour, which was prompted by the tax plan. The San Francisco-based bank also said it would target $400 million in donations to community and nonprofit organizations next year.

ANOTHER TAX WIN: Boeing to Spend $300M on Workers and Charity

The Boeing Company, America’s largest aerospace firm, tweeted Wednesday that the just passed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will allow them to spend $300 million on “employee-related and charitable investment.”

“On behalf of all of our stakeholders, we applaud and thank Congress and the administration for their leadership in seizing this opportunity to unleash economic energy in the United States,” Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg said in a press release. “It’s the single-most important thing we can do to drive innovation, support quality jobs and accelerate capital investment in our country.”

“For Boeing, the reforms enable us to better compete on the world stage and give us a stronger foundation for the investment in innovation, facilities and skills that will support our long-term growth,” Muilenburg continued.

According to the same release, the exact allocation of the $300 million is still being worked out, but the broad strokes are as follows:

$100 million for corporate giving, with funds used to support demand for employee gift-match programs and for investments in Boeing’s focus areas for charitable giving: in education, in our communities, and for veterans and military personnel.
$100 million for workforce development in the form of training, education, and other capabilities development to meet the scale needed for rapidly evolving technologies and expanding markets.
$100 million for “workplace of the future” facilities and infrastructure enhancements for Boeing employees.

Also, Comcast/NBCUniversal is one of those that immediately announced $1,000 bonuses, and outright said it was due to the tax reform.

Methinks perhaps Pete found something old, or already in the plans? I dunno.

Even if that is true petey. YOU still have the right to USE another company. It's called competition. You don't like the prices. You go somewhere else. Capitalism works that way. And don't forget....by February. You, and others will be able to afford the increases since...YOU WILL BE PAYING LESS IN TAXES. Of course. Remember. YOU ALSO HAVE THE RIGHT to return any MORE INCOME you make to the IRS. They will love it.

How are the full o'crap Dems going to spin this story? That ATT and Comcast are colluding with Trump?

More troubling for the Dems is how they are going to spin things if the American economy, job market, and wage levels start to move into high gear in response to the tax bill? I'm guessing they will try to somehow shift the credit to the nearest Dem Senator that isn't already the defendant in sexual harassment or bribery charges, if there are still any Dems that qualify.

How do you think the middle class is going to view democrats now after they fought to prevent a tax cut for them?

Yep, 2018 is going to be rosy indeed! Looking forward to November. :thumb:

You're going to need to import 100 million more illegals in the next 10 months to have any chance of breaking even.

TRUMP EFFECT: Apple Looking To Bring $252 Billion In Foreign Cash Back To USA After Landmark Tax Bill

Since the Senate approved Trump’s tax bill 51-48 in a midnight showdown, we have already seen major economic wins in this country:

TRUMP EFFECT: AT&T Announces it Will Pay 200,000 US Employees ‘Special $1,000 Bonus’ Due to GOP Tax Reform Bill

TRUMP EFFECT: Boeing Announces $300 Million Investment Initiative Thanks To GOP Tax Reform

TRUMP EFFECT: Fifth Third Bancorp Raises Minimum Hourly Wage, Issues Bonuses To Employees Due To GOP Tax Reform

TRUMPMAS: Comcast Announces $50 BILLION INVESTMENT Due To Historic GOP Tax Reform

Well, here’s another one.

For all the scowling that Apple’s Tim Cook did during those Tech council meetings, he might not be able to feign outrage over the Republican president any longer. It has now become affordable for Apple to fulfill a longtime goal and repatriate $252B in cash that currently sits overseas. Via 9to5Mac:

Apple would be able to take advantage of a one-time tax break, paying just 15.5% tax on the cash, rather than the 35% it would have had to pay previously.

If Apple chose to bring all of the cash back to the US, it would pay $39.1B in tax. And this would be practical because the company has already set aside $36.3B – almost the entire amount – for exactly that eventuality. But there’s one catch …

Reuters notes that Apple could be caught out by one provision in the bill. The bill introduces a minimum tax of around 13% on income from patents held overseas, and this could put an end to one method Apple has used to reduce its tax bill.

The treatment of foreign patent profits is important to Apple because shifting those profits overseas was a cornerstone of its tax practices for decades.

In effect, the company attributes a large portion of the value of its products to patents and other intellectual property such as trademarks. Apple then assigns some of that IP, proportional to overseas sales, to subsidiaries in countries with low tax rates and assesses substantial patent royalties on sales. Those royalties then flow back to those low-tax locations, like Ireland.

This means that it no longer matters where the patents are held – Apple still has to pay US tax on the revenue assigned to them.

To further discourage companies from assigning patents to overseas subsidiaries, the tax bill also reduces the tax on patent income within the USA. This falls to 13.1%, meaning that Apple Inc might as well hold onto ownership of future patents, as there’s little to no benefit in shipping them off to tax havens.

TRUMP EFFECT: Canadian Business May Look To Move To USA Following Landmark Tax Bill

Since the Senate approved Trump’s tax bill 51-48 in a midnight showdown, we have already seen major economic wins in this country:

TRUMP EFFECT: AT&T Announces it Will Pay 200,000 US Employees ‘Special $1,000 Bonus’ Due to GOP Tax Reform Bill

TRUMP EFFECT: Boeing Announces $300 Million Investment Initiative Thanks To GOP Tax Reform

TRUMP EFFECT: Fifth Third Bancorp Raises Minimum Hourly Wage, Issues Bonuses To Employees Due To GOP Tax Reform

TRUMPMAS: Comcast Announces $50 BILLION INVESTMENT Due To Historic GOP Tax Reform

GOP lawmakers have been celebrating the historic bill since it was passed on Wednesday, and now other countries are taking note. Senator Johnny Isakson made an astute observation that many may not have considered before: the very real possibility that with these new incentives, business may be looking to migrate from Canada to the USA in the near future. Via National Post:

“We’re not gonna have any more pharmaceutical companies buying donut-makers in Canada and move their headquarters to get a lower tax rate,” said Sen. Johnny Isakson, in a slightly bungled reference to Burger King buying Tim Hortons and relocating north.

“We’re gonna have a lot more companies thinking about becoming donut-makers and doing it right here in the United States … It’s an incentive to stay in America if you’re located there, and come to America if you’re not.”

That’s one of the many goals of the bill that passed the Senate after Isakson spoke, then on Wednesday passed the House of Representatives, followed by a celebration at the White House where Donald Trump toasted his first major legislative accomplishment.

Ya know... if I wasn't mistaken, I'd almost think that's what "trickle down" is.

If the US economy didn't have to compete in a global market then I'd say yes, it is trickle-down economics. But with the global economy considered, the tax bill theoretically could incentivize companies and investors that have the choice of investing in America or in other parts of the globe, to do the investing in America. If it does work that way, we all win with more jobs, better paying jobs, and lower taxes. If it doesn't work that way, then the Dems will be back in power and we can all go back to the higher taxes, I suppose.

http://www.debatepolicy.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=11105&stc=1Ryan said it as part of his sales job. At the time, it was an accurate statement. Lot of changed made between then and now. You know, kinda like when when Obama promised affordable health care and it turned out to be an albatross? Who knew? Oh yeah, we on the right did.

Sorry Pete, I tried to help you out but I can't even wordsmith you into looking good
