That makes my damaged little heart go pitter-patter.Should trying being directly under the flight deck where the Harriers land. It'll make your heart do more than "pitter-patter".

I would LOVE that.

I would LOVE that.I doubt THAT. It goes right through you like nothing. I can't recall for sure, but I believe it actually disrupts your heartbeat.
I know you can forget hearing the wife you stood in line for an hour to talk to on the one phone when one lands.

Sounds exciting! Really, I'd love to experience it.

Abbey. I have to agree with Gunny on this one. It may sound romantic in a way, to hear that happening...at first. But Gunny and I both know, living on a ship, UNDER a flight deck, where AIR OPS take place almost 24/7 for six months or more...SOON gets pretty old, tiring, and SLEEPLESS. Especially when (As I Did) stand 12, or 8 hour watches that rotate every three days, giving you only a small window to actually get some sleep.
Those Harriers Gunny spoke of....I remember as well aboard the USS Nassau, during Operation Desert Shield, and Desert Storm in 1990-91. We left Norfolk August 18, 1990, and the ship didn't get home until May of 1991.
That video I posted is on a carrier that NEVER STOPS launching, and landing aircraft. The only difference between being there in person, and watching the video is....YOU CAN TURN OFF THE VOLUME.
I miss going to sea, but I will never miss ENDLESS NOISE. Even when the aircraft stop...being around 5000 other people ALL THE TIME...isn't as nice as it looks.

We were on our way home and they turned us around and sent us back to the Gulf. Not to mention Stop-Loss cost me 7 months time in grade. Any wonder I hated Saddam?

aboutime ... I was just thinking about our previous post. I guess I wouldn't mind being at sea again .... for ONE day. I was just remember sliding down ladderwells and looking at my knee. I don't think that would be in the game plan anymore. And that lack of sleep thing was Hell. On the Boxer, our berthing was directly under the galley. We got to hear them stomp around and bang trays all 5-6 hours of night we got. And being packed like sardines to sleep in berthing? Half the idiots snore and other half talk in their sleep.
Some things I do NOT miss.

You guys make valid points. But keep in mind I'm not talking about being there for months. Just a day or two, lol.
And no, you are not going to talk me out of it- I'd jump at the chance to experience it.

Abbey. I wouldn't try to talk you out of it. Going to sea was always an Ironic pleasure for me. For one, I didn't like having to be away from my wife, and son's for so long, and on the other hand; there's nothing else like it (being at sea) that I can imagine doing more intentionally that I enjoyed.
That old expression about taking the sailor out of the sea, but not the sea out of the sailor...FOR ME, still applies.
My family will never understand it, much like they know I will always be a Firefighter as well. I spent 11 years, during my broken naval service, as a firefighter in my hometown before I went back into the navy.
Enjoy yourself whenever you go. It's always much more fun for just A FEW DAYS.

A few days, huh? The ships I've seen lately don't have rails for noobs to hang over :).

You are relentless, Gunny.

You are relentless, Gunny. Not at all, ma'am. Just a realist. The comment was addressed to AT and he gets it. The ships I was on were ghost towns the first week to 10 days. Everyone was in the rack and GREEN. And those of us that were not were DEFINITELY relentless giving them Hell:laugh:.
The sense of humor is different. Simple as that.

Guys - she was just paying a compliment to the service; no need to shit all over her with 'cold hard facts'. You can consider accepting the compliment, give her a smooch and let it go.

Y'all sure as Hell think YOU are funny when you're "just teasing". You (the ubiquitous "you") don't hesitate to say whatever the Hell you want then act butt hurt when when fire is returned in kind.
Whatever Abbey does or wants to do is HER business. She has every right t post her opinion and I have just as much right to tease her about it.
Lighten up.
