The end goal of 0bamacare was to enact single-payer healthcare when the monstrosity became unworkable.

California just got a sneak preview of the cost just for that state - $400 Billion, which is more than their entire budget. They'd somehow have to raise an additional $200 Billion for it, and like any deal like this, there are many unforeseen billions hidden that would rear their ugly heads after the fact.

But everyone would get free healthcare, illegals too!

Vermont tried to do this a while back and scrapped it after it became clear that it would bankrupt the state.

But hey! If we did this nationally, it would totally be affordable, right?

Amen, NT, and I'm sure when they came up with the $400 Billion figure, they didn't calculate in the "if it's free, the I'll use it wastefully" factor. As soon as you make anything free, people will begin using it for any old reason, or more likely no reason at all. Got a slight ache in your back that just started yesterday? Get an MRI! After all, it's free! Got a lumpy mattress? Check in to a hospital, and stay in one of their beds! It's free!

Attitudes can adjust this way within days, and would increase the costs by a factor of 50 ... in the first year. Attitudes will continue adjusting in year 2.

Human nature and free stuff don't mix well.
