She was named for Henry Morganthau Jr (the 52nd Sec of the Treasury) and built by Avondale Shipyards.

She was Commissioned on 10 March 1969 and considered to be "state of the art" with both Pratt & Whitney FT4A Gas Turbine engines and Fairbanks Morse Diesel engines for Main Propulsion.

While on the "birds" her controllable pitch propellers could bring her from 0 to 30 knots in 60 seconds and could bring her to an all stop close to the same time.

Soon after her Commissioning, She was sent to Vietnam for service in the Navy's "Operation Market Time". For exceptionally valorous action in combat, she received a Navy Unit Commendation, Combat Action Ribbon Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, Vietnam Civil Actions Unit Citation, Vietnam Campaign Medal and other awards.

And now after 48 years of faithful service, she has been decommissioned.

And the rub? She will be acquired by Vietnam

Beautiful Original Cutter Bilge. Great photo. As a former Tin-can Sailor myself. I can honestly, and fully respect anyone who served aboard her, and other ships like her.
I am probably remembering wrong here, but I do believe I saw her during the 60's, at REFRESHER TRAINING in GITMO. Every few years, all East Coast ships were required to visit Gitmo to train new crews, with the older crews.
CORRECTION. It wasn't that ship I saw. Can't remember the name. But we in the Navy respected our fellow sailors, and always joked about the BROWN WATER navy!!:poke:

Did more than a few Ocean Stations in the North Atlantic, rocking and rolling was our "thing".

And yes Aboutime, reftra in Gitmo was always interesting. Remind me sometime to tell you a story about me, a Marine Shore Patrol and the Cattle Car :laugh:

Yep, luckily we all age with the days. ;) Sometimes folks get mad if you don't notice haircuts, beards coming or going, weight loss...when you 'know' someone, just doesn't figure into much in the day-to-day.
