The summer is coming soon.(only 9 Sundays left) Traditionally many from Northern parts of Russia will go to the Black Sea to "change the decorations" and found themselves under palm-trees, Magnolias and cypresses on the shore of the warm sea.
Beginning from the middle of 60s the traveling by car was becoming more and more popular to spent summer vacations. Now it is much more accessible because of a number of cars and the developed road net and tourist infrastructure.
The distance between Moscow and Sochi (high way M-4 'Don') is about 1,200 miles and is easily covered by the second trip day if you have no intention to make your journey a rally-racing.
Usually on the way from Moscow to Sochi the travelers spend a night somewhere near Rostov-on-Don to be at destination next day at about 2-4 p.m. From the remaining 370 miles 120 miles are the road along serpentines.
As Russians used to say 'It is better to see once than to hear 100 times' you can enjoy a virtual trip on this rout. (There are several clips in a row and separate clips from Dzhubga to Sochi) Hope it will be interesting for you to see the actual picture...

Some of that route reminds me of the Pacific Coast Highway in California (CA1 and U.S. 101).

Yeah. The pch is on my bucket list. I think we crossed us 90 about 20 times between Pensacola and Jacksonville. :)

My stepfather is from Jax. I know the place. Every 4th of July we'd go down and get a room on Ormand Beach. (just a few miles north of Daytona). I actually preferred going to St Augustine. St John's County. That wouldn't do with my production queen mother. She should have worked for MGM in the 50s.

My for real father lives in Navarre. Bout 30 miles east of P-cola?

Yes. I know Navarre well. We stayed in Gulf Breeze for 3 months. Wife worked in Pensacola. We saw the blue angel show last summer. Unrelated, my sister in law was stationed at Milton for a year or so before transferring to San Diego.

To address Balu I learned to swim in the Black Sea. Just so you don't think I'm hijacking you. I lived on the northern coast of Turkey.
Black Diamond I lived in Key West and Miami. The parents moved to Jax after I joined the Corps. I would go down to FL when I was stationed in VA. I wouldn't be spending any money running to CA. The water sucks. It's cold as hell on a good day. I used to run my Marines through it. Just cuz I'm a nice guy like that. :laugh2: But when you go on a run from Del Mar to Edson range? There's this thing called the Santa Margarita. I'd fuck with their heads. Run up to the river, act like we were turning around ... We're going to run. I'm sure the collective whine was hear in NYC:laugh2:

We have been to key west about 7 or 8 times. There's a major military installation there. Is that Navy? Seems like I have heard my sister in law say she wants to be stationed there.

And what were you trying to do? Make up for the lack of sand fleas in California? lol.

Black Diamond. Last time I was in Key West aboard ship, was in the early 90's. I do believe the navy still has a COMM STA (communications station), and an AIR station there, and a small contingent of other navy for services that apply to port visits (I think).

Naval Air Station Key West - CNIC

In addition, NAS Key West is the host facility for numerous tenant activities, including Joint Interagency Task Force South, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Army ...

NAS Key West. Was a listening post. The old man is a A Spanish and Arabic linguist. EW. There were actually 2 bases there. NAS and the sub base. NAS was around Sugarloaf Key, The sub base was on the tip of the island. Housing was in Sigsbee Park. And those F-102s GWB didn't fly? I got to sit in the cockpit of one. The den mother's hub was an F-102 pilot. My LL coach was an F-100 jockey.

We lived on the beach. Just how it was.

.... aaahh .... the good ol' A147 .... which I myself have travelled along ... in ... NORFOLK ....

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

- Reminds me (perversely) of Edmonton. Which is the 'real' Edmonton ? A north London borough ... or a major city in Canada ?

With apologies to Balu, whose periodic efforts to impress us with insights into Russia I don't always necessarily appreciate to the level he would require of me [... & I'm not inclined to wax lyrical about my favourite whelk stall to be found on the promenade in sunny Southend-on-Sea, for example. Traditionally, many Londoners will go to the seaside resort of Southend in summer, because it's cheap & cheerful ....]
