Police Link Bailey Homicide To Black Muslim Group

OAKLAND -- Police said they recovered firearm evidence connected to the slaying of an Oakland journalist during a series of early morning raids Friday, including one at a bakery linked to a black Muslim group.

Colleagues said Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey, 57, had been working on a story about Your Black Muslim Bakery before he was ambushed and slain Thursday morning near the Alameda County courthouse in downtown Oakland.

"The search warrant yielded several weapons and other evidence of value including evidence linking the murder of Chauncey Bailey to members of the Your Black Muslim Bakery," Assistant Police Chief Howard Jordan said.

The pre-dawn raids followed a yearlong investigation into a variety of violent crimes, Jordan said.

Seven people were arrested, including the son of the bakery's founder, on charges including homicide, robbery and assault, Oakland police spokesman Roland Holmgren said. It was unclear whether those charges were tied to Bailey's slaying.

Joseph Debro, an Oakland businessman who writes a column for the Post, said Bailey had recently asked him for information about Your Black Muslim Bakery's financial troubles for a story Bailey was writing.

"To him it was just another story," Debro said. "He wasn't apprehensive or anxious about it at all. He said he was working on a bunch of stories and this was one."

Your Black Muslim Bakery was founded in 1968 by the late Yusuf Bey as a haven for struggling urban families. It sells natural baked goods alongside books by Malcolm X and other black leaders.

Bailey was a longtime reporter for the Oakland Tribune before becoming editor of the Post, a weekly newspaper geared toward the Bay Area black community, earlier this year. He had written stories for the Tribune about the bakery and its founder when Bey was facing rape charges in Alameda County. Most of those charges were later dropped, although one was still pending when Bey died in 2003.

Bey's son, Yusuf Bey IV, who was in custody Friday, took control of the original bakery and several franchises. In 2005, he was accused by police of being the ringleader in a group of black Muslims who smashed liquor bottles in Oakland corner stores and berated the Muslim owners for selling alcohol to the black community, because alcohol is forbidden by Islam.

Your Black Muslim bakery has been plagued with financial problems for several years, culminating in a bankruptcy filing last October.

In a declaration filed with the bankruptcy court on June 29, Yusuf Bey IV conceded he was "inexperienced in the business world," and had "received advice and consultation from those who had proven to me they did not have my best interests at heart."

Don Bolles, a reporter for the Arizona Republic, was the last reporter killed in the line of duty in the United States. He was killed by a car bomb in 1976 while reporting on organized crime.

Broadcast Networks Ignore Murder of Oakland Post Editor

When a member of the journalism community is murdered, wouldn't you expect most news agencies to report it?

Well, on Thursday morning, Chauncey Bailey, the editor of the Oakland Post, was gunned down by an at that time unknown assailant.

On Friday morning, Oakland police arrested seven people at Your Black Muslim Bakery in connection with Bailey's murder.

Yet, despite all this, ABC, CBS, and NBC haven't said a word about this shooting, or the connection to Your Black Muslim Bakery. Why?

Kudos go out to CNN for logging three reports on the matter Friday including this one during the 11AM EST "CNN Newsroom":

TONY HARRIS, ANCHOR: And quickly now, let's get to T.J. Holmes in the CNN NEWSROOM. T.J. is following a developing story of a raid in Oakland, California, of a bakery there.

T.J. HOLMES, CNN ANCHOR: Yes, Tony, we're getting a lot more details. Good morning to you.

A lot more now from affiliate KTVU that's doing some reporting there. But these are the pictures we were watching.

This is Your Black Muslim Bakery is the name of this place. It's a staple there in the community, been there a long time. Several locations, known for certainly some of their baked goods, but also it's a community outreach group that really has opened its doors over the years to struggling families.

So it's not just a bakery. There's more to this group.

Well, there was a raid this morning. Nineteen people now in custody, is what we know. But according to our affiliate, these 19 people are being detained, again, according to KTVU, because they believe they have connections to at least three homicides that have happened in the past month, as well as other types of various violent crimes.

And so now you have these 19 people in custody, one of them being Yousef Bey IV, who is the son of the founder of Your Black Muslim Bakery.

Now, again, several municipalities have been involved in this raid, not just there in Oakland, but several around, according to the police chief there in Oakland. This was part of a yearlong investigation.

Now, again, they've been arrested, these 19, in connection with three homicides in the past month. One of them, according to KTVU, happens to be the murder we saw just yesterday of a local reporter, Chauncey Bailey. He was a long-time reporter there in the Bay area, was the editor of "The Oakland Post," was gunned down in the middle of the street yesterday by masked gunmen. According to KTVU, he was actually work on a story that had to do with Your Black Muslim Bakery.

So, these are the reports we're getting now from affiliate KTVU, getting a lot more details about this raid. We're trying to figure out why and what locations, but there were four locations in addition to Your Black Muslim Bakery. Four all together, including Your Black Muslim Bakery. But 19 people in custody in connection with some violent crimes, including three homicides in the past month. So we are getting more details. We are expecting, Tony, a 3:00 Pacific news conference. We'll hopefully get even more clarity about what exactly is going on.

But again, we saw that horrible, violent -- that murder of that "Oakland Post" editor, Chauncey Bailey, gunned down in the middle of the street by masked gunmen.

HARRIS: It's unbelievable.

HOLMES: Well, now the report is that, in fact, the story he was working on for Your Black Muslim Bakery -- he was working on a story for them -- well, it appears now that it's being reported that the people being held are being held in connection with that murder.

So a big raid here, a huge raid in the predawn hours. Nineteen people in custody right now. A lot more details to come in that press conference -- Tony.

Yet, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, and NBC have all been mysteriously silent.

Why?

As a post script, a handyman for Your Black Muslim Bakery confessed to Bailey's shooting on Saturday. I wonder if these fine news organizations will ignore that as well.

Black on black, so I don't think that is the 'flash point'. However, the reporter/editor, regardless of race was investigating the bakery. Now that is where the murderer seems to have come from. Whoops, almost forgot to mention the bakery was BLACK MUSLIM.
