The current situation has nothing to do with religion. It is all about political grandstanding.
Turkey has an election coming up where the main ballot issue is a referendum giving wider powers to Turkey's president and transform the way the country is governed. He wants the Turkish ex-pats in other European countries to demonstrate in favor of the measure, which could influence the outcome.
The Netherlands does not want outside agitators in its country.
