Slash the USCG's Budget by $1 Billion?
https://www.aol.com/article/news/2017/03/04/trumps-budget-will-slash-1-billion-from-the-coast-guard-at-a-t/21873332/
We have front line cutters that were built in the 60's and need to be replaced.
I could drive a chipping hammer through the hulls of many.
Our MH-65 helos came out in the 80's and are a maintenance nightmare now.
Cut back the damn welfare programs! Keep the USCG functional for National Security,
Pollution Response, Aids To Navigation, Maritime Law Enforcement, and Search and Rescue.

Today’s 21st Century Coast Guard operates in a complex and ever
changing environment. Increasing demands across the maritime
domain require near-term agility while strategically investing finite
resources for tomorrow. Aligned with Department of Homeland
Security and National strategies, Coast Guard strategies inform
the 2017 budget request, ensuring continued Service to the Nation
through fiscal stewardship and value to the American public. The
Posture Statement provides the strategic context for our external
environment and highlights my focus for Fiscal Year 2017.
The Fiscal Year 2017 Budget illustrates the Coast Guard’s dedication
to strategically investing for the future while sustaining mission
excellence. I am exceptionally pleased this budget includes a
major investment to accelerate acquisition of an additional heavy
icebreaker to meet future challenges in the Polar Regions. It also
provides funding to procure long lead time materials for the first
Offshore Patrol Cutter, a major milestone toward replacement of our aging medium endurance cutters.
Investing in the 21st Century Coast Guard also means an unwavering commitment to our people, ensuring
every member has the resources required to conduct today’s challenging missions while providing a safe
and professional workplace environment.
We will continue to meet our missions by attracting, developing
and retaining the most talented maritime professionals.
As a unique force with both military and civil authorities, the Coast Guard and its missions touch nearly
every facet of the Nation’s expansive maritime domain. Coast Guard authorities, people and assets are
essential to national security and economic prosperity. I am extremely proud of the results our active
duty, civilian, reservists and auxiliary personnel accomplish daily in support of national priorities. The
2015 Performance Highlights demonstrate the enduring, multi-mission character of the Coast Guard and
our intrinsic value to the United States.
A fully equipped, flexible and forward looking Coast Guard can meet any operational demand. Today and
into the future we will keep the Nation’s waterways secure and its maritime gateways connected to the
world. We will remain Semper Paratus – Always Ready.

As a non-military person, I don't think Trump knows what the Coast Guard does. I read an article once that stated that many people thought the Coast Guard was part of the Navy. As opposed to being an independent branch.
I didn't know what the Coast Guard did until Elessar came on DP. I didn't realize how essential it was to the security of our country. My guess is that Trump doesn't know this either.

What make you think that President Trump has the same level of awareness as you do? May be I will surprise you, but there is such a conception as erudition. In case of the USA Coast Guard means Naval Border (Frontier) Guard or Security. In ANY country this is the separate branch of the Army or a Special Forces with own missions. For example in Russia this branch belongs to FSB (former KGB). http://s19.rimg.info/aee19e2775457d135efdf745e7d94e15.gif (http://smayliki.ru/smilie-1224821991.html)

We have a variety of missions and responsibilities. In time of a declared war, we might merge into the Navy as we did in
WWI and WWII. Search and Rescue, Maritime Law Enforcement, Pollution Response, Maintaining Aids to Navigation,
Commercial Vessel Inspection and Regulation, International Ice Patrol, Merchant Mariner Examination and Registration,
Support Arctic and Antarctic Scientific Research, Commercial Fishing Vessel Regulation, Enforcing Laws and Treaties on the high seas,
Inspection and Safety of port facilities, Drug Interdiction, Illegal Migrant Interdiction......I might be missing a couple, but you get the picture.
As far as Law Enforcement goes, only the U.S. Marshall's Service has a broader spectrum of authority than the USCG.
We can support local and state Law Enforcement Agencies. DOD branches cannot do that. Several years back 2 Gunner's Mates
were transporting ammunition when they observed a bank robbery in progress. They drew down on the pair of robbers and held them at gunpoint
until the Cops arrived. The crook's lawyers complained, but federal courts upheld what the two Coasties did.

Beyond the needs of their everyday duties, when the wall is built both ends will be the responsibility of the USCG when the cartels figure out that tunneling or scaling the wall won't work - I expect there will be a lot of small, fast boats trying to get through.
I'm hoping they'll be added to the overall upgrade the other branches are about to get.

Congress Boosts Coast Guard Budget
February 2016
By Yasmin Tadjdeh
The Coast Guard has often been characterized as perennially underfunded, but thanks to Congress, the service received a major boost to its acquisition accounts for fiscal year 2016.
In the recently passed omnibus budget, Congress allocated the Coast Guard nearly $928 million more in acquisition, construction and improvement funding than it asked for in the president’s fiscal year 2016 budget request. That will go toward a ninth national security cutter, a new polar icebreaker and increased funding for the offshore patrol cutter.
The funding increase comes at a time of growing missions for the service. Over the past year, it has taken on a larger role in patrolling the Western hemisphere as smugglers attempt to bring drugs into the United States. Additionally, as sea ice melts in the Arctic and opens up new waterways, the service — which operates the nation’s polar icebreakers — will play a greater role in the region, officials have said.

The best way to solve questions is to look up the answers. The facts will always be the facts (unless they are "alternative facts," of course ).
Like I said before, not many people understand what the Coast Guard does. Or even know it is. If you read what the cuts to the Coast Guard entail, it seems as though whoever came up with this believes the Navy can easily pick up the slack. They obviously do not know there is a definite division of responsibilities.
How many members of Congress served in the Coast Guard? How many of Trump's advisors? I think this is where the problem is.

Under Carter's budget cuts, we did not have money for fuel to do two-boat training.
I had to train boat crews at the damn dock or en-route to an actual case. That is
hazarding our SAR mission. Some cases I could not teach and had to leave the helm

The Coast Guard is one of our nation’s five military services. Coast Guard as we know it now, is the oldest continuous sea-going service in the USA.
Established by President Washington and Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton as the Revenue Cutter Service.
Merged with the US Lighthouse Service, then with the US Lifesaving Service, then with the
Steamship Inspection Service.

I'm pretty sure British hypocrisy is the same as US hypocrisy. You looked like a rambling fool who is unable to have an intelligent conversation without resorting to personal insults. Insults which were based on an incorrect premise at that.
Let's keep this in perspective. FJ. SOme things grate on peoples nerves. SOme people grate on peoples nerves. I take great pribe in the fact the two most arrogant whack jobs on the board who talk the most crap refuse to speak to me. :) And speaking of talkin crap ...
Y'now, when you don't know what the Hell you're talking about, you shut the Hell up and listen to those that do. Seems to me there's a wealth of military experience from all branches on this board but y'all civilians know more. As if ... Here's the secret little trick ... I don't tell the squid how to drive the boat and they don't tell me how to fire my weapon. I don't mosey in and start instructing the pilot on how to land a bird on a moving ship.
When you're out of your league, you sit down, shut the Hell up, watch, listen and learn. Most of the vets on this board are Navy, to include me. Marines are a Dept of the Navy. I got LOTS of sea time and I know what these guys do. If it floats or flies I've probably been in it.
One of my "rewards" for a successful tour on the drill field was getting stuck behind a desk in DC in an office full of 10 zeroes. Guess what that makes you as the only enlisted person .... We're so dumb. I completely re-wrote the Unit deployment Program and handled the budget and scheduling for it. I KNOW how the system works. I've also got over 4 years of sea time.
I don't come on here telling y'all your business. Don't come on here telling us ours.

I have never known aboutime, bilgerat or nightrain to accurate on many things. You don't need to be conservative to be accurate.
And what does accuracy have to do with the Coast Guard budget?
You are such a twit.
Every single time I've taken off the gloves and thrashed you on one of your countless insipid statements, you've tucked tail and fled like a thief in the night.
Every. Single. Time.
I'd say that a 100% accuracy rating on my part is well deserved when it comes to you.
And here's where the rubber meets the road, toots : On the rare occasion when I'm wrong, I will freely admit it right there in the thread and correct myself - and give props to the person who corrected me. So far in the 10 years that DP has existed, there have been 2 people that have caught me being factually incorrect - and neither of them have been you.
I would say it's fair to say that YOUR accuracy, on the other hand, has been demonstrably and reliably wrong 99% of the time, as evidenced by your flight from everything you get challenged on.
Your Jekyll & Hyde routine doesn't fool me. We both know you're Hyde with the miserably unconvincing attempts at portrayal of Jekyll, which drives your pathological liar persona.

Why do I need to apologize for agreeing with you? I think you misunderstood my statements. The Trump administration actually backed my previous assessment with their statement yesterday that "cuts in the Coast Guard budget will help fund Homeland Security." Not taking into account that the Coast Guard is already a part of Homeland Security. And seized three times the amount of illicit drugs that the Border Patrol did.

Then WHY don't you reflect that instead of your sniping and diversive comments?
You act like an expert, but have not one inch of direct personal knowledge.
THAT is what gets my hackles on the rise...Ask me or Bilge....we will be straight and direct;
yet you assume things you have no clue over...Gunny, abouttime, and CSM have those clues as well.

She does it because she takes some kind of perverse delight in denigrating those with military service as part of their history. I speculate she has low self esteem and has never done anything of worth in her life other than to squirt a kid out from between her thighs and even that may not have happened. She has about as much integrity as hooker screwing for God.

She has ran from more than just you when the tough gets going. Then when given MANY chances to prove allegations of lying, she almost always then disappears, because she IS a non-stop liar. You can always just link to her greatest hits, and of course add to them, when she starts in with her trolling and other crap.

And yet when Jim is challenged, or asked to reply to a sore subject, his answer is to either ban the challenger from a thread or toss their responses into the board dungeon. As I have said many times before, disagreement is not trolling. Some people merely refuse to accept this.

Replying to a new thread, with the very first response ignoring the content and AGAIN doing nothing more than poking at a source - is trolling. Poking at a source IS NOT disagreeing in any way at all. I don't need to accept anything. If you don't like being thread banned for your antics, or having your troll posts moved, then don't be a trolling asshole. You and others are more than free, I mean MORE THAN free to point out where I have moved your otherwise good and contributing posts. Also, where you were removed from a thread for nothing more than a good contributing post.
So go ahead, make your case for all to see right now - give us links to where your great posts are being mistreated... We shall await...

Then quit being a fool and listen to ones who have lived it, breathed it, slept
with it and - in the case of combat Vets, survived it.
Using the MSM as an example and basis makes you look like an idiot.
Ask US, Dummy.
Most often than not, the MSM is a bunch of idiots who twist fact into opinion.
You call yourself intelligent, but are deluded in your leadership by the DNC.
Cannot refute a word I said in this thread about the USCG's proposed budget
cut because you have no knowledge of the service. Yet not a word of apology
came from you because you act like a little golden-assed liberal princess.

That is an untrue statement. After all these years, you're still here. I've gone knock down drag out toe to with Jim and I'm still here. Only thing I hate about having my crap moved is when I can't find it. I mean, who cares?
You DO get on here and troll. I know it. You know it. We ALL know it. Take your medicine when you do. When I got banned for being out of control at least I could be honest and say I was out of control and deserved it.
I don't know what you did to Jim nor when, but you made yourself an enemy. Deal with it and don't start this whining sh*t.

Jim didn't move your trollings to your trolling thread. I did.
If you don't like being treated like a troll, don't be a troll.

I'm not in favor of cuts to any of our protectors. This is demoralizing to our serving men and women, and is a true function of our federal government.
I'm as unqualified as Noir to add anything of real substance to this debate ... with the single exception that I can perhaps add a contribution qualifying as intelligent and reputable.
The only decent response is to say that no service .. certainly not the one being discussed in this thread !! .. should suffer cuts, quite the opposite. Noir's contribution is a typical Leftie wrecking one, of always finding excuses to support REDUCTIONS in essential services.
I very much hope that this will be reversed.
