Russia to develop 5th-generation medium-range anti-aircraft missile system (http://tass.com/defense/926693)
"Work is in full swing today to create a unified national ABM-air defense system of the 21st century to comprise S-500 air defense missile complexes and advanced mobile radar stations. As a whole, the entire ABM system will be upgraded until the end of 2017. Importantly, the system is being modernized without the withdrawal of capabilities from the organic mode of operation, i.e. without interruptions in operational readiness," he said.
At present, the radar Don-2N is also undergoing profound upgrade to increase the range of detecting both ballistic targets and small space objects and make its transmitters and receivers more powerful," Krasnaya Zvezda said in its material.
The Don-2N is a stationary multi-purpose all-round surveillance centimeter-range radar station created to perform missions for Moscow’s missile defense. The radar is capable of detecting an ICBM warhead at a distance of 3,700 km and at an altitude of 40,000 km. The Don-2N is the central and the most complex element of Moscow’s anti-ballistic missile defense system. It is assigned the tasks of detecting and tracking ballistic missiles, measuring coordinates and aiming anti-missiles at incoming targets. The radar is integrated into the unified system of additional data support for missile early warning and outer space control systems.

That gives you 300 miles detect range, of about 10,000 foot target area - a vague idea of an F-22's location that is useless for missile tracking.
That's less than 5 minutes before Wild Weasel eliminates Sunflower after it goes hot.
Better build a lot of them!

Dude's in dreamville. The Russians can't defend against an FA-18A flying at 200 feet. With a squid or jarhead on the stick? Non-happening event.

You've omitted one small thing - Russia is not Papua New Guinea you used to fight against. We have rather different means for protection and destruction. So, better to follow a good saying - don't trouble troubles until troubles trouble you. :slap:

Our military does not develop weapons nor train for warfare against New Guinea. It is focused on confrontation with Russia and China.
The jihadists have generously volunteered for active training, which is awfully nice of them. Our targeting R&D has benefited greatly.
We have rather different means for protection and destruction.
So do we. Thousands of them.
So, better to follow a good saying - don't trouble troubles until troubles trouble you. :slap:
I'm all for having productive discussions and comparing our military capabilities is enjoyable. I've always been fascinated with warfare, tactics and technology.
Your tone in the other threads set the mood for today, in case you were wondering. I can spout propaganda as well as you can - although I never received professional training in that area.

1. 'Papua New Guinea' in the context of my post was a common noun. As wel as 'Gunny' which I sometimes use in my posts.
2. You must be joking! As far as I remember the official US statements your anti-missile system in Europe was aimed against Iran and North Korea.
3. Military capabilities may be compared in real fight only. I don't think that this is a worth thing to aim at. Besides, discussing this subject means to go into details - rater slippery field, as almost nothing is in open access. Don't you think so?
4. I know the level of awareness of Americans and others from the West rather good, so I am accustomed to their calling 'propaganda' everything which is actually better than they've been taught or heard or read about.
Your main drawback (not personally yours) is that you have a problem with your sources of information know almost nothing about Russia and Russians and have no experience in folding mosaic canvas using separate fragments, putting them all together. :slap:

I'm relatively certain that it was placed there to safeguard from Russian aggression. Despite political games & soundbites, it was.
What was it that Russia said regarding placing missiles in Cuba, again?

Indeed. Still, it is a worthy exercise and interesting.

If you, as a KGB Colonel, really believe that - and if your active duty cohorts do as well - then I daresay you've vastly underestimated western intelligence agencies at your great peril.
And somehow, I don't think that's the case. :slap:

That kind of contradicts what you said earlier.

As to the members of the board I think about everybody better then they maybe are. Even Gunny. And that I ignore him it is another pair of shoes. I don't want to come into details on this point again.

Well, you certainly made me work for it. The search function is acting up for long-range searches again.
Anyway :
When I were on the forth course of my Institute and "polished" my English in the International Exhibitions in Moscow, visiting other booths I was surprised being asked if I were from Alabama. But... it was many, many years back.
4 years of formal American English instruction in Moscow, complete with an Alabama accent.
Thank you! http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/he_and_she/give_rose.gif
I DO NOT want to drop my face into the dirt when shoving some countries to my Grandson.
I want HIM to see the target to be shot, as he used to be proud of his retired Grandpa with all my awards and personal encrusted pistol, which he really admires.
Highly cherished Officer's pistol.
Me? Angry?...
Never! To become angry, this is ENOUGH reason to loose your professional career.
Have you ever seen Lt.Colonel Putin be angry? Sure that NEVER. But he knew ME in 1995, when nobody of you even suspect of his existence.
Working with Putin, who was a Colonel in the KGB in 1995.
Sometimes your sentence structure is off a bit, but it is not unintelligible.
Thank you!
This is a weak point of ANY foreigner, or a professional when out of practice for along time. http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/sad.gif
Besides, here I am not fulfilling any task, but my personal to improve my English for my PERSONAL needs. http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/smile3.gif
You were professionally trained to talk like an American; it wasn't a hobby. Now you enjoy brushing up on it.
In general I am grateful for EACH of you for your being as you are.
So,
Remaining yours,
Balu.
I have the honor! As we used to say among us, Russian Officers.
Russian Officer.
First - Thank you for your post.
Then, as to Gunny, I NEVER argue with Sergs. I've already said, that in terms of US insignia I would have had "chickens" on my shoulder straps. I am a retired Senior Officer, who worked in many countries in Soviet times and later. So, his "knowledge" is of no use and of nor interest for me. I know much more than he can imaging. Besides, he is rude and bad-mannered person.
Retired Colonel, spanning the reign of the Soviets into Russia.
I don't think that I was "underestimated" when I was proposed a job in one of the Western Armies and a pension after retirement according to my rank. I see that you have understood nothing yet. http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/smile3.gif
Resisted defecting to the West - something offered to Intelligence Officers out in the field who possess valuable intel.
I don't know what the Russian pension is like, but if you'd have taken a U.S. offer to defect and they'd credited you with 30 years service, you'd be making $8,000 per month as a retired O-6 (Colonel). Probably some really nice bonus perks too, if they wanted you bad enough.
Who was it that offered? Brits or Americans?
Offers like that don't generally go to regular forces Colonels, so you must have been KGB or GRU.
You are smart, Sir. I bet you are not a truck driver (With all my RESPECT to this profession and drivers. I know what it means to be hundreds miles at the wheel) http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/smile3.gif
Boom.
Well, you certainly made me work for it. The search function is acting up for long-range searches again.
Boom.
To sum up you failed to find that I've said that am a retired KGB officer. Only your assumptions and nothing more.
For your kind information, in 1995 Putin was a head of the St. Petersburg branch of 'All-Russian public political movement Our Home is Russia', with it's Headquarters in Moscow where they all were instructed during election campaign 1995 to the Parliament. :slap:

I also know who provides your ISP. It's why I always took you seriously when many others didn't.
But if you'd like to just leave it at that, I'm good with it.
