An online broadcast of a US network from the floor of the House of Representatives has been bizarrely interrupted by the Russian news site RT.The C-SPAN website was replaced by RT for about 10 minutes, said a spokesman for the US network devoted to public affairs.
The problem was likely a routing issue, since RT is one of the networks that C-SPAN regularly monitors, he said.
There was no suggestion of hacking.
Still, the interruption proved embarrassing considering that RT is a state-run network accused of being a propaganda channel for the Russian government.
Amid accusations that Russia has sought to interfere with the US presidential election (http://news.sky.com/story/putin-ordered-campaign-of-influence-in-us-election-say-american-spy-chiefs-10720287) and was behind hacking during the campaign, the incident will likely feed conspiracy theories.
C-SPAN is a network that shows public events, including Congress procedures.
At the moment its programming was cut, it was showing Representative Maxine Waters, a Democrat who had just begun criticising a Republican bill she contended would damage the regulatory authority of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
She also was criticising President-elect Donald Trump for choosing someone with deep ties to Wall Street to lead the SEC.
