How dare they want to protect the city! Manned checkpoints? Oh my, that's a no no. This is London's version of the "wall". Good for them though!! Granted though, this is different, as this isn't something being put forth to help with illegals. But it is being put forth for protection, and for damn good reason. But even after all of these attacks, some will complain. And dang, the negative of it, is that they are talking 2022?

London to be protected from terror attack by new £5m ‘ring of steel’ built around the City

A MULTI-MILLION pound “ring of steel” could be built in London in order to protect some of the capital’s highest skyscrapers from a terrorist attack.
Manned checkpoints, rising steel bollards, restricted roads and crash-proof barriers are among some of the measures proposed to strengthen the defences of London’s Square Mile at a cost of £5 million.
A number of new skyscrapers which are to be built in the City are seen as particularly vulnerable to a lorry bomb attack, the Evening Standard has reported.
Counter-terror specialists have put together plans for a secure cordon which would seal off key routes to Undershaft, St Mary Axe and Leadenhall Street and limit traffic access without having the need for vetting by security.
Police and intelligence agencies are reviewing security for all landmark buildings and public events in light of what happened in Berlin on Monday.

Let's see one of our UK members do his best to rip apart this idea,
Only to be told by another UK member to shove it.

I have a very strong notion as to exactly what you would offer!
...Clarify. I will not put names out unless they participate in a thread...
unless it to tease a friend, and they'll see the humor.

... 2022, eh ?
Seems optimistic. There are bound to be pressure groups coming along, inventing all manner of outlandish objections to it, delaying it further. Hell, if we can't even VOTE for Brexit without crazies coming out of the woodwork to try and stymie it, what chance does this have ?
We shall see how far this version of a 'ring of steel' idea REALLY gets towards completion.

You do indeed.
There's nothing wrong with this idea at all, except for the one issue of its expected completion date ... 2022. I understand that these things take time to get 'up and running', but we could do with its equivalent much sooner ...yesterday would've been ideal ...
I'm just waiting for some Leftie or other to invent a braindead excuse to object. Someone will, of course. I wonder who ....

I will be the first to object. While not a show stopper, it will impact my schedule of operations leading to world domination!

I lay no claim to be a military expert or even thinker. It does seem logical to me that all cities do what they can to anticipate and protect against known threats, of which lorries are but one. In an era of asymmetrical attacks, by both individuals and groups though, it seems to me that cities, countries, indeed the West in general, must conserve resources and maintain flexibility for responses and in protection. Expensive, fixed solutions reminds me of the Maginot Line.
It is good that Europe in general, Britain in particular are looking for solutions and acknowledging a long-term threat.

Agreed.
I know that NYC is always on high alert. And of course also has tons of skyscrapers. I wouldn't mind seeing them devise some sort of plan to reroute things and make things extremely more difficult for any potential attacks, especially with driving vehicles. It's something all major cities should look into in some fashion, IMO.

Fixed deterrents at certain landmarks, buildings, etc., seems a good idea. Steel and cement seem to be the 'defense of choice' and is relatively inexpensive.
Long term fixes that are costly seem to serve mostly as a challenge to be overcome by enemies and cause a false sense of security to the citizens.
Flexibility seems to be the key as their tactics keep changing, as is in their interests towards successful attacks.

By design, cities protect those within the walls. It is an outmoded form of protection for the weak. You lose yur flexibility the second you lock yourself in a box. Hitler used that mentality against the British and French like a charm. We are not innovative and wait for a disaster to react.
The enemy we have can be easily defeated given our resources, It just takes someone willing to do it.

Patton was a genius at maneuver warfare. He stole Robert E Lee's handbook. But you didn't have to guess. He was coming. Now figure out how and where cuz you're going to get hammered.

Rommel you magnificent bastard....
I read your book.Rommel was a genius as well. Where he got caught was Hitler got them all jacked up in a static, defensive war. Not Rommel's forte. Hitler was a master at strategic blunders. He beat himself through his own ineptness.
