Iran's President Hassan Rouhani orders nuclear-fuelled warships as he accuses US of 'violating' deal

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has ordered the head of the country’s Atomic Energy Organisation to start planning the development of nuclear-powered ships in reaction to what he called the United States’ violation of their nuclear deal.

Earlier in December the US Senate voted to extend the Iran Sanctions Act by 10 years, a decision that was criticised by the Iranian foreign minister at the time who said it showed the US government had “a lack of credibility”.

In a letter read out on Tuesday on state television, Mr Rouhani condemned the move as a breach of the 2015 nuclear accord and told the nation’s scientists to begin “planning the design and production of fuel and nuclear power plants for maritime transport”.

The leader also said he had ordered the foreign minister to mount a legal challenge against the US.

The 2015 nuclear accord between Iran and six world powers lifted a variety of sanctions against the nation in exchange for restrictions on the Iranian nuclear programme.

Yet the US keeps its own set of trade restrictions against the country – separate from the agreement – which were set to expire at the end of the year.

Politicians in the Senate said the sanctions were extended not only because of nuclear issues, but also over concerns about ballistic missile-testing and human rights in the country.

President Barack Obama is expected to sign the extension into law in the coming days.

Trying to figure out how Iran thinks, would be like trying to figure out my ex's thinking. If one can do it, they'd be as off as the one they're trying to figure out.

No big deal. More of the same old Sabre Rattling from Iran.

Let them do it. If they are smarter than the U.S. to do so. I say...GO FOR IT.
And, if Iran thinks they are smarter than the Russians...who, by the way, have lost HOW MANY NUKE SUBS over the years?

Gotta say it here because I have confidence I can say it. NOBODY, and I do mean NOBODY else can come close to building Nuke powered ships like we can. At least from the SAFETY, and ECONOMIC methods we have used since the NAUTILUS was launched.

And lets not forget...The U.S.S. Enterprise CVN-65....COMMISSIONED in 1961, and just recently decommissioned after FIFTY YEARS OF SERVICE?? Also...the U.S.S. Long Beach.

Thing is, we have made light of them for so long WITHOUT understanding how they think we have allowed Iran to become our moat dangerous foe. Should have taken them out n 79.

They DON'T think like us. Our worst flaw. They want us dead and have zero problem with how they get there. While we sit around playing Chamberlain thinking we're going to sit around having deep meaningful conversations with pit vipers. You kill snakes You don't sit around trying to have a my feelings are hurt chat.

This just proves more that this "deal" was a bunch of crap.

"Here, take tons and tons and tons of money. Oh, and use it to help with your nuclear ambitions"

WH: Iran’s Nuclear-Powered Vessel Announcement Doesn’t Violate Nuclear Deal

(CNSNews.com) – A declaration by Iran of plans to develop nuclear-powered vessels – in response to legislation extending U.S. sanctions – is not a violation of the nuclear deal, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Tuesday.

“The announcement from the Iranians today does not run counter to the international agreement to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” he told a news briefing.

Iran has made such announcements before, and some experts have treated them dismissively.

At the same time, however, nuclear reactors powering ships or submarines are in some cases fueled with uranium enriched to more than 90 percent. The nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) permits Iran to enrich uranium to no more than 3.67 percent.

In a letter to Atomic Energy Organization of Iran head Ali Akbar Salehi, President Hasan Rouhani instructed the AEOI to begin planning to develop “nuclear propulsion for use in the field of maritime transportation” as well as the production of fuel for that purpose.

Without indicating whether the plans would entail surface vessels or submarines, Rouhani said the work should be performed within the framework of Iran’s “peaceful nuclear program” and its international obligations.

He made clear that the steps were Iran’s response to the recent passage by Congress of legislation extending the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) by ten years. Separately, Rouhani instructed Foreign Minister Javad Zarif to make formal complaints through established mechanisms about the purported JCPOA violation.
