Democrats’ Second 100 days in Power Seems a lot like the first 100 – Unproductive

Post Office Renaming Dominates 110th Congress
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell noted on CNN’s “Late Edition” that “all we’ve been able to accomplish is to keep the lights on in the Capitol. Nineteen or 20 post office renamings . . .” [CNN, “Late Edition,” 7/22/07]. In addition to renaming post offices, since taking power in January, Democrats have poured time and taxpayer dollars into hundreds of political hearings and investigations meant to criticize the Bush administration’s activities. They have opened more than 300 investigations over the past six months and conducted a staggering 600 oversight hearings, an average of approximately six hearings each day. These hearings yield plenty of talk but few results.

Americans Disapprove of Democrat-led Congress
Just one of the Democrats’ “Six for ’06” campaign pledges has been signed into law, and few expect that Democrats will be able to fulfill their other promises. Earlier this month, Rasmussen polling showed that “[j]ust 16% of American voters now say that Congress is doing a Good (14%) or an Excellent (2%) job” [Rasmussen Reports, “46% Say Congress Doing Poor Job, 16% Say Good or Excellent,” 7/3/07].

Legislative Priorities Languish
Earlier this year it took more than 100 days for the Democrat-led Congress to approve an emergency war funding bill. And on other issues like judicial nominations, progress has come to a standstill. As the Wall Street Journal noted, “[a]fter six months in charge, Democrats have approved exactly three appellate court judges . . . [i]n the last two Reagan years, Democrats confirmed 16. And in the last two Bill Clinton years, Republicans confirmed 15” [Editorial, “The Southwick Stonewall,” Wall Street Journal, 7/23/07].

Defense Legislation Unfinished
While Democrats scheduled weeks of debate to encourage funding cuts for the Iraq mission and a premature end to the counteroffensive surge, Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid chose to leave unfinished a Department of Defense funding authorization bill that would approve funding for equipment and a pay increase for soldiers.

Partisan Censorship Resolution Proposed
Yesterday Democrat Senator Russ Feingold said on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” “I think we need to do something serious, which is why I'll shortly be introducing a censorship resolution of the president” [NBC, “Meet the Press,” 7/22/07]. Two hundred days into 2007, useless resolutions like this have come to define a Congress that is all talk but no action.
