John Wayne Hinckley Jr. Freed 35 Years After Trying to Impress Jodie Foster

John W. Hinckley Jr. will be released from a government psychiatric hospital more than 35 years after he attempted to assassinate president Ronald Reagan and shot three others outside the Washington Hilton on March 30, 1981, a federal judge ruled Wednesday.

Hinckley, 61, no longer poses a danger to himself or others and will be freed to live full-time with his mother in Williamsburg, Va., effective as soon as Aug. 5 subject to dozens of temporary treatment and monitoring conditions, U.S. District Judge Paul L. Friedman of Washington wrote.

I recall in the movie, the De Niro character thinks he can clean up all the crime in the world, and falls in love with a senator's campaign worker. After being hounded out of the senator's campaign office, he tries to assassinate the senator, but Secret Service chases him away. Later he kills Foster's pimp, Harvey Keitel and some mobsters, Jodie Foster goes back home, De Niro is a hero. Hinckley was tangled up in that mentally, he probably thought Reagan was America's pimp.

After Hinckley's successful insanity defense at trial, the law was stiffened to make it a more difficult defense. Hinckley had a soft sentence and has been living at home and roaming the streets already for many years due to the best trial lawyers his family's money could buy.
