But my first question is, why does a group like the new black panthers get away with the same/similar in calling for deaths? I'll post this current story, and then an example of the NBP at the bottom. I just don't get it sometimes.

Police: Man jailed after Facebook comments to ‘kill all white cops’

A 19-year-old Macon man was arrested after he allegedly posted comments on a TV station’s Facebook page telling the public to “kill all white cops.”

Derrick “De De” Hudson, of a Roosevelt Avenue address, is accused of typing “Just kill all white cracker cops LLH” (laughing like hell) on a post by WGXA-TV about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to an arrest warrant. He is charged with soliciting people to commit murder.

Others on Facebook rebuked the comments, which were linked to a TV station post showing a video of Alton Sterling’s 15-year-old son speaking out about his father’s death.

Police shot Sterling July 5 in Louisiana in an incident captured on video and widely circulated on the internet.

A Bibb County sheriff’s sergeant took a screen shot of Hudson’s alleged threats, according to an incident report.

Hudson was booked in the Bibb County jail about five hours after the comments were posted.

The remarks—delivered about a block from the church where white racist Dylann Roof allegedly murdered nine black churchgoers—came at the same Tuesday night New Black Panther Party (NBPP) rally where one speaker declared “this is war” and where NBPP leader Malik Zulu Shabazz told the all-black audience of about 250 that “we need to complete” the work of a former slave who wanted to kill as many white people as possible in a revolt.

How is it possible that the New Black Panther Party is able to get away with inciting violence?

Social media (and more generally the Internet) is in a weird sort of limbo when it comes to 'what is a threat' and should it be treated the same as a comment made to someone IRL.

For example, I'm certain that over the years there have been threats to kill/maim made on this board. They're not taken seriously, but if they were then who knows what the repercussion could be on the poster, because it's just a lottery ATM.

For example, I'm certain that over the years there have been threats to kill/maim made on this board. They're not taken seriously, but if they were then who knows what the repercussion could be on the poster, because it's just a lottery ATM.

True, I had a few that wanted me in "the box" earlier than planned. :)

But the NBP party has done this online, Facebook and Twitter, also on other regular websites, also on Youtube of course. And often they are in parks or other places where they gather and speak, and of course offer these same choice words, or similar. It's not like it's a one off thing on Facebook

I honestly think that sometimes folks are afraid to take action, as it's likely to spur anger and unrest with others.

My mum has to deal with it a lot - partners that have fallen out that start sending abusive messages over Facebook etc, including threats to kill etc, it's surprisingly difficult for people to accept that digital comments carry as much weight as verbal ones.

For a non-legal discussion over the 'it's okay for x but not y' to say this on a social media platform. It's just like the Twitter feeds that were known ISIS propaganda outlets, that got broken into and started tweeting out pornographic pictures - Twitter blocked the accounts. The apparent message bring that ISIS propaganda is okay, when pornography is not...

Can't she get the police involved? It's one thing when it's guys playing internet tough guy, but if it's someone known, and has access - the police should get involved, or maybe get a restraining order. There used to be a time that things WERE just words. But effing hell, no more, now things are a bit chaotic.

And that's crazy with Twitter. I've heard at times they blocked or made it harder to find certain things politically related, and porn as you point out, or for harassing an old girlfriend - but explaining to the world how you plan on dominating it, and killing 3/4 of it, that's AOK!!

whoops kinda realised how that may have read - my mum is not the one receiving the threats etc, she's a legal executive and so will be representing the victimised party, or indeed the abuser. Which is why she 'has to deal with it a lot'
