Both had certain unique qualities.

I would take Jean-Luc Picard over Kirk because Patrick Stewart is a much
more 'polished' actor than William Shatner. Shatner forces his lines where
Stewart lets them flow.

I must admit it's strange to see a choice between James Tiberius Kirk and Jean-Claude Van Damme. :dunno:

Kirk: "..Prime Directive Shrime Directive.

Spock: "um well technical yes , but .. um no not really boss.

This one made me laugh out loud. I love the way all the Kirk Fu 'recipients' look like they're just standing there, with their hands down at their sides and in some cases with their back turned. It sure looks like Kirk Fu involves a lot of sucker punches. ;)

[Note - of course it only appears that way. As we all know, in reality Kirk Fu saved the Enterprise and the whole Federation many times over]

Picard benefited from having much, much better writers. Better, more-complex stories.

Plus his accent gave him credibility.

I've been watching the original StarTrek via Amazon video. What strikes me is this: The women on the show have incredible legs. And EVERY TIME there's an Alien chick in the show, they flash to kirk who always looks suddenly horny.

But my vote is Chris Pine. The dude rocks it - because he has the swagger of Shattner with solid acting chops.

Not too surprisingly, I like the 'Britishness' of Patrick Stewart's offering as Jean-Luc Picard (which is odd, if he's supposed to be French ??). We also both like Earl Grey tea ...

.. but I still have to say that Kirk is the better choice. An 'action hero' like the Kirk character always seemed a lot more credible in the role of any Starship captain. Stewart never did seem convincing in that way ...

Didin't hijack anything I'm aware of. I just didn't think of Pine. His dad played on CHIPS. We all remember things from our own time periods. The original Stark Trek was campy. Shatner couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag. But it was it was what was on when I was a kid.

...ignorant philistine...
TOS was the best.
IT'S THEATER MAN!!!!
why don't people get that??!!:bang3:
:angryman:

TOS had the BEST characters, Best character interplay, and the BEST stories.
STNG basically Ripped off 3/4 of the TOS storylines and didn't add a thing. and got confused and PC with it's social commentary.
(the wore example is where Riker and others just KILLED their secretly made clones without a word, regret or concern about human life.)

TOS had a near perfect mix of SCi-FI concepts, Cultural social commentary and Pop Culture draw. all on a simple stage. A STAGE.... With COSTUMES.... and MASK... LIKE THEATER MAN!!!

TOS was rich with the above in subtle ways.
for example the episode Spock's Brain Where a woman steals Spocks brain and takes it to her planet and uses it as her world's central super computer.

the mix of
LAYERED sci-fi concepts= advanced medicine + brain removal + brain body connection + Brain as computer processor +
Layered social commentary = 1 Female takes over whole ship of men/women without a struggle + Advanced society creates hothouse culture where future generations mental capacity atrophies + Culture where male females are culturally separate and the women are dominant and more technically advanced.

Set as a mystery and search story includes and 1 of the best 1 line descriptions of what men think of women,
"...bringers of pain and delight..."

TOS, accept no substitute folks

Interestingly his son was born when he was 80

married three times and had seven children,. a WW2 vet he went ashore on D-Day. he was hit by six rounds fired from a Bren Gun by a nervous Canadian sentry. four in his leg, one in the chest, and one through his right middle finger. The bullet to his chest was stopped by a silver cigarette case given to him by his brother. His right middle finger had to be amputated, something he would conceal during his career as an actor.

The real bad ass commander that saved Kirk & crew, the Federation, and even the Klingons was Lucille Ball. When the top Executives went to Lucy and wanted to drop the show due to production high costs, Lucy said; No, I like the show, and the rest is history as written in the Star Log.

I watched that one about twice I think. DS9 Was another I never got into. It took me forever to figure out Avery Brooks played Hawk on Spenser For Hire.

I loved Enterprise. Which is surprising since I don't like Scott Backula. But watching them screw up at every step was just so Marine Corps.

Captain Kirk was the bomb. Want to negotiate? How's this foot up your ass for a negotiation? :laugh2:

TV has become too PC. I liked those old shows. Still do. But the campy ones from the 60s are cool. Lost in Space is the hokiest show ever. My favorites were Combat and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. I (hate to admit this) even had the model of the Seaview.

I just watch old shows on the net. My TV usually has some forensic crap on it. I haven't watched network TV in 30 years.
you're not missing anything.

You can't beat the Love Boat for campy. And every old unemployed B star showed up for an episode or 10, lol.

You can't beat the Love Boat for being bored to tears and still saving for a car to escape in. For those of us old enough to remember, the lefties had this crusade against violence on TV in the mid 70s. We got Little House on the Prairie, Father Murphy, the Love Boat ... and I worked nights so it didn't matter a whole to me anyway.

I remember the first time I saw SNL. I was high as a kite and I'm channel flipping and this commercial comes on (a spoof) and I'm just sitting there with my jaw on the floor. I'm like WTF? It took me awhile to figure out it was a spoof.

That whole against violence thing the lefties dreamed up ruined it for me. I liked Starsky and Hutch but even they got PC. And I was overseas when cable became mainstream in the 80s. When I got back I was like WTF? I think I watched MTV for 2 days straight. In the 80s, Tour of Duty, Miami Vice and TNG were what I'd watch. I had toddlers. PBS and Disney movies.

I'm still with Captain Kirk. Load the photon torpedoes, Scotty. We're going to kick some ass.
