Very intriguing story.
I don't think it has anything to do with Trump being aligned with Hillary. It has everything to do with his lack of political skills and immense ego. Trump is used to getting what he wants. He issues orders and things happen. He has a staff of lackeys.
American politics doesn't work that way. Trump can't order people to vote for him.

The idea of Trump running a "shadow campaign" is mind blowing. I know he had pretty much no paid staff in California. Does he assume that since he is the presumptive GOP nominee that everyone will fall in line?
