My grandfather got an all-expenses-paid vacation to the beach. So many people died he went from SSgt to Capt real damned quick.

Mere words cannot express what so many in this era have chosen
to ignore.

That was my Dad's generation. He was in the Pacific Theater on
a wooden minesweeper....USS Dash (AM88).

I'd want to be in a wooden minsweeper. They aren't magnetic. I laugh when I see them searching for mines with bayonets in the movies. Wrong damned answer, Chumly. Try a stick.

If I recall correctly, weather blew many of the Higgins boats off course. Low visibility hindered the airborne units as well.

They ALL landed in a hornet's nest.

Imagine if we had landed at Calais instead of Normandie.

Imagine if we had landed at Calais instead of Normandie.

They were expecting us to land at Calais. I think Operation Overlord was a screw up. You got the 101st and 87th Airborne scattered all over France. And that whole frontal assault thing is BS to me. War by attrition. We can throw more bodies at you than you can kill. Great. Except for the bodies.

And my mentality as a Marine is I'm calling in CAS. No Marine General I ever knew would send you into weather where planes couldn't fly. I'm bringing some rain on your ass. I'll mop up. As is usual with us, the Brits got a walk on Sword and Juno. We get Omaha.

And regardless what anyone thinks, Eisenhower was a chair polishing candy ass. He got the job as CinC because he was a diplomat. Montgomery was a screw up looking for a place to happen and DeGaulle was useless.
