Another one is upon us. How do we react? How do we cope? How do we explain to the children?

I'll be in a third grade class presenting my thoughts and premonitions concerning the present state of affairs in America. But, only on an elementary level. I'll also be shuttling some fellow Vets to the VA hospital later in the day and I'll be registering some before uninterested voters later on tonight. All the while I'll be really enjoying my Monday!!!!!!!!!

You just can't beat participation and passion!!!!!!!!!!

I admire you. I burned out a while ago, too many years of fighting the system. Yep I had a few wins but I had to put up the shutters eventually. I'm working on getting the passion back. Luckily I had a guru, he's in my avatar, that's my small homage to the man. Saul Alinsky.

The hypocrisy of the con's leaves a lot of us breathless, dr.

Okay - I'm just getting my breath back then :)

Do you understand that those Americans now so willing to embrace the name of Abraham Lincoln would now gladly re-enslave the niggers and me as well? I don't think that thought is lost on most Americans. I'm going to do my best to remind my fellow Americans that I too am a nigger and so are they. I know it takes some thought and comprehension, but, do you dig it?

I dig it. Lincoln was a Republican when the GOP stood for something good. It's been interesting for me to read about the GOP. I actually didn't know a lot about it but there was a time when it stood head and shoulders above the Democrats, particularly those Dixiecrat types. Now it's very different. The intolerance is remarkable. The invective is amazing. The narrowness of thought is sad.

But she'll be right, as we say! Bush is out soon and the Dems - for all their faults - will be in the White House and the Congress and a new light will shine.

And then I'll be cursing the Dems as they shaft us in Aus over trade :laugh2:

Of course they are! When they're in power they're going to put the interests of the US ahead of the rest of the world......sneaky little buggers......fancy doing something like that :salute:

If I were a lot smarter I'd have the answers. But just an observation. I accept and value difference - in politics and in other areas. One of the major problems the US has - and in our country as well, for the same reasons - is that the centre (in political terms) is crowded. But the centre in the US is much further to the Right than it is here. The Dems in the US are well to the right in the way I see politics. It's like the choice between a Chevvy and a Ford. But for the moment that's the only choice you have. It's interesting to read Americans who bemoan the fact that the Dems and the GOP are so similar yet would die with their leg in the air if someone suggested they vote for a socialist candidate.

I'm not being nasty or partisan. We have exactly the same problem in Aus. The middle is damn crowded. It gives us very little choice. For us it's Holden (GM) v Ford as well.

Blair's alleged "Third Way" failed, mainly because it was Thatcherism Lite, it was no bloody Third Way at all, that was a con job. It will be interesting to see the direction Brown takes the Brits. If he's wishy-washy I have no doubt that the headlines in the British press will be "Brown to Beige".

I'm not following a theme here, just extemporising. Writing a riff as it comes into my mind.
Kerouac's stream of consciousness without the poetry.

I'll admit, I guess I'm too young to remember Coltrane. But I hear a reference to him in one of my favorite tunes "Woke up this morning" by A3 - or better known as the intro song to the Sopranos.

Alrighty then, I'll check into it and give some feedback when I can!

No need to tell me about Jimi. I think his guitar playing has made an impression through the ages. But although many will disagree, I still hold Joe Satriani as the best I've ever heard.

Satriani and his foot pedals and sound effects are truly impressive. Where is the guts? Joe don't have 'em and neither does anyone else that has ever attempted to do the experience. The 5 senses don't work when we're talkin' about Jimi.

You were one when Woodstock happened :)

Coltrane, yes, but - sorry if I sound like I'm lecturing, I don't mean to - it's important to put him in context. A lot of his music is rooted in the 1950s and you can hear it. I know it's a disservice but I can always hear a sort of bebop in his music. The funny thing is I was as a kid into modern jazz and introduced to it by listening to Dave Brubeck (first his quartet, the one with Paul Desmond, Gene Wright and the incomparable Joe Morello) and then later his earlier combos (weird I know, going backwards, but jazz is like that). At the same time I was reading a lot of Kerouac and Coltrane was a favourite of his and so I went back and tried to get into the era. It was the 1950s, but not the Donna Reed 1950s (I know, I've got a thing for her, she was a stunner), it was the alternative 1950s, it was the Beat 1950s, it was a time when Ginsberg wrote and performed Howl. It was all wrapped up.

Anyway, check out the "lost Coltrane tapes" for a look at the effect Trane and Monk had. It's a terrific story and gives you an insight into the times. If you're a reader then try and get a copy of Kerouac's "On the Road" as well and get into it. It's an experience.

Check out "Always with me, Always with you".

Fair enough, I think they're both awesome anyway. It's hard to judge talent so many years apart as well. It's like comparing Walter Payton and Barry Sanders - both tremendous, but different styles from different eras.
