I only quoted part of the article.

I apparently left out the part that details where the Federal government got the authority to do this.

But I'm sure the erstwhile readers of this forum will point it out, any time now.

Makeover coming for food nutrition labels

May 20, 2016

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nutrition facts labels on food packages are getting a long-awaited makeover, with calories listed in bigger, bolder type and a new line for added sugars.

And serving sizes will be updated to make them more realistic — so that a small bag of chips won't count as two or three servings, for example.

First lady Michelle Obama is expected to announce final rules for new labels in a speech Friday morning as part of her "Let's Move!" campaign to combat childhood obesity. The changes were proposed by the Food and Drug Administration two years ago and are the first major update of the labels since their creation in 1994. They are now found on more than 800,000 foods.

"This is going to make a real difference in providing families across the country the information they need to make healthy choices," the first lady said in a statement.

Hmmmm... if folks got off their fat asses and got a bit more exercise (especially kids) maybe they wouldn't be "obese". I am no saint when it comes to eating healthy and all that but I do get in some exercise as part of my daily routine....I don't need the government to tell me that eating half a dozen donuts then taking a nap every day will make me fat. On the other hand, I suppose it keeps the current first lady busy and out of other business...

I am not really sure that this is such a terrible thing to do.

I watch my intakes of things and the labeling on packages helps.

High cholesterol runs in my family, so I will look before purchasing.
Plus, some preservatives give me headaches. I avoid them and
appreciate the packaging identifying them.

Nope. You look up the food values on at least two different sources. A glycemic index is a good place to start. Basically whole, simple foods work. Anything in a package or a can does not. The FDA is also PC. They pimp chicken and pork and say red meat is bad. When I was a kid bread was fattening and potatoes were fattening. Now they're healthy.

I ain't listening to the FDA. I look the crap up on my own. I was an athlete for years. I was WAY up to snuff.

What I don't get are people that worship food. It's fuel to me. I don't eat sweets. I eat some trash because it's convenient.

Ohhh...I do not disagree at all.

But some can be helpful. I crave some things at times, but I will
look at the labels carefully. If it shows artificial preservatives,
I drop it and look and something else. MSG gives me headaches.

If I crave a hot dog, I go for all beef with no MSG, as an example

As I see it, it's the psychology involved.

Set precedents for overweaning control, no matter how 'reasonable' the basis ... and you'll get creeping control over your lives in other ways. Once the process starts in earnest, who's going to see to it that it stops ?

This is part of the perniciousness of Socialism, folks.

Information like food labeling is useful.

But my comment wasn't about its usefulness. It was about a Federal government that was forbidden to do certain things (actually a lot of things) by its founding document... and regularly ignores those bans and happily oversteps its power regularly.

The food-labeling thing is a trivial example, but it is still an example.

But a government that usurps small, minor powers, will inevitably start to usurp non-trivial amounts of power... and will slide slowly toward tyranny.

And people who judge it solely on the basis that what it's doing is "useful", are helping it in that slide.

Many agree that mandatory seat belts being forced on automakers was the beginning. While I wouldn't dream of riding in a car without wearing or allow anyone else to not wear theirs in my car, really don't want the government being the enforcer. Darwinism really deserves its chance and all.

How about the individual themselves? We don't but any mechanical devices on vehicles (well, civilians don't) to ensure they cannot travel faster than posted speed limits, so it is up to the individual to maintain a safe speed for the conditions, for example. We don't fence off every body of water to prevent drowning; it is up to the individual to either learn to swim or stay the heck out of the water. Yeah, I know.....common sense. Kathy is right...give Darwin a chance!

A speed limit is a fixed value.
I could give you 5 different packets of plain white bread, all with different sugar contents, without labling how are you meant to make and informed choice?

Don't eat white bread....

We all know we can set up all the strawman, hypothetical situations you (generic "you) can think up. IMO, it still boils down to individual responsibility.
By the way, I don't know about where you drive but where I live, sped limits vary; 15 mph in a school zone, 30mph in residential areas, 55 mph on most highways with some at 65. I suppose that we could mechanically regulate vehicles to 15 mph since that is the lowest and safest speed.

I am not against the government labelling foods; I am against them regulating what we eat ala NY where they are going to tell folks they cannot buy or consume a 16 oz soda ..... however, once you start labelling foods (and the tack record for the US government agencies getting that right is poor at best) then they start trying to regulate it too.

No. The only "must be" is do I like it or not? If you don't have enough sense to see what you're eating, and can't see your belt buckle or toes, then YOU not a label needs a clue. I mean just how dumb and sheep-like do you need to be? "I need the government to tell me what to eat". No, I don't. Long before the internet became available to me I had these things called books and magazines. I did not and do not need nor want the government regulating what I can and cannot eat. It's ridiculous.

Kathianne mentioned Darwin. If you aren't smart enough to know what to eat, as an individual, then you don't need to be here. You can't regulate over-indulgence. I eat whatever I want. And I'm wearing the same size jeans I wore in high school 40 years ago. It's not my fault people are self indulgent fat slobs. It's also not the government's business.

Bottom line is that if enough customers want something-in this case nutritional information-the manufacturers are going to provide it. Let's just say that some companies figure they don't 'have to,' even collude not to. A new company will and the original group will lose business until they comply.

What shouldn't be done is the government telling businesses exactly when and how the information will be provided. Companies should be able to design their packaging in such a way that they feel will increase their business.

Case in point-a yogurt I like comes in containers with a real tight lid, it makes sense as the portions are larger than average. They are on Facebook and someone said that they've broken more than one nail trying to remove the lid. They are now in the process of redesigning how it opens. Companies that want to keep their base and grow are very responsive.

Seriously if you are that concerned about that, make your own and have control. Most people buy by taste, they try different products then keep buying the one they think tastes good. When new products come on market, they'll try and either return to their 'favorite' or have now found a new 'favorite.'

As are you. If you want the info, go get it. Doesn't mean you need to shove it down everyone else's throats. I don't read labels. They don't tell the truth anyway so what's the point? I look up the nutritional value of the food. I STILL have a glycemic index from the 90s I took out of a magazine. Eat basic, whole foods. Protein, carbs and fat. And don't let the label fool you on good and bad fat. Use some common sense and know when to walk away from the table.

I don't always eat the healthiest, but I don't overeat. And I eat small portions throughout the day instead larding my ass up at one sitting. It isn't so much what we eat. It's how we eat. Either way, the government needs to worry about more important crap than what I'm eating.

Shoving down our throats? A label on the side of a product with information of what's inside, is shoving it down our throats? Oh the humanity!

You're not getting the point. I can tell you how many trans fats are in oreos. Don't eat the shit. It's garbage. That's how many trans fats there are.

And aside from a smoking habit, I've always been an athlete, and semi health food nut. And I've taken the time over the years to look the crap up on my own. I don't need someone else to tell me how and what to think. Good fat, bad fat. Good carbs, bad carbs. Good protein, bad protein. WTF-ever. If you're stuffing your face with cookies, then do it. It doesn't matter what's in the damned cookie. It's a freakin' cookie. There's nothing good coming of that. If you want to be informed, the info is out there.

In the meantime, the government doesn't need to be telling me what I can and cannot eat. Talk about Orwell's 1984.

The "good" components being the ones the Constitution said the Fed govt could make laws about.

Namely, none.

If states want to do it, fine. They can even come to agreements about how the label look, what info they contain, etc. if they want to.

I think it's about the people, not the governments. Self discipline works. If you can't see your feet, you might want to reconsider what you're doing. This is to me just another intrusion on our freedoms by the government. They can't balance a budget but they want to tell me what I can eat.

There is no reason for this as most people already KNOWS about the FOOD they are about to eat. Just more crap for a business to have to spend monies on that they might have used to HIRE another employee.

Seems to me what Gunny is saying is that use common sense. Want to avoid lots of chemicals, fats, sodium, calories? Don't eat out. Heck even vegan places are not without problems in what they use.

Within your control, what's in your cupboards, pantry, fridge, and freezer-buy fresh. Organic or not, whichever you need to clean fruits and veggies good. Lots of greens and super fruits.

Watch portions and protein should be the smallest serving on your plate.

Use whole grain breads and pastas if you must.

Avoid sugar.

Use condiments sparingly, use healthy fats when needed.

This isn't brain surgery here, my mom did this since I can remember and I'm no spring chicken.

I read labels, I remember when the nutrition info wasn't on most, just knew that the ingredients were listed by the largest amounts in descending order.

I'm not against any labeling, think it's smart of companies to provide the information-what I do disagree with is it being mandated.

Insufferable? Because they don't want the government in every aspect of their lives? No one is saying that they don't want ingredients or any of that crap, but rather that they are tired of the government telling folks/companies what they MUST do. It's about regulations and forcing private businesses to operate in a manner of THEIR choosing.

I think the government should force any businesses that serve food/drinks - that they should have to advertise if they are homosexuals. This way the customer can be informed, and not take any chances eating/drinking where there are homosexuals. Let them be informed about the decisions of where they do business.

Fair, right? Just someone being forced to do practice in a manner that gives customers a healthy choice, correct? Because I know when I have 3 choices, where I'll be shopping!!! Or wait, are you going to say that this is an overreach? That the government shouldn't be involved?

And don't say they are "different", because they ARE NOT - we are talking about the government getting involved, overreaches, regulations and telling businesses how to run their businesses. Either regulations and overhanded government regulations and overreach are good, or they are not.

But I'm betting that the liberals that think it's a good thing to overreach, will suddenly find it odd, or too much of an overreach, when it comes to something they disagree with. And that's BS. You guys want the government involved in every aspect of ones life, to spoon feed and help raise everyone - until it's something you disagree with.

You guys want the government involved in every aspect of ones life, to spoon feed and help raise everyone - until it's something you disagree with.

jim. PETE is funny. Here I am almost 70, and I've managed to survive, eat what I want, when, and where I want....ALL WITHOUT UNCLE STUPID telling me...Until Now?
HOW INSUFFERABLE IS THAT?

Shucks. I have a 96 year old Mother-in-law, born in Ireland, who survived the London Blitz of Hitler, and she's always been a great cook. She has never worried about how UNCLE STUPID would tell her what to eat, or how to cook it. And YES...before she reached this age today. She often went to MacDonalds like most everybody else. GO FIGURE?

I eat whatever I want. I'm almost 60. Can still see my belt buckle and my toes. I decided a long time ago if I drop dead, oh well. I'm not going to live in fear of it. I'm going to enjoy the time I have and I damned sure don't need a bunch of politicians telling me how to do it.

You got a fat kid? You're the parent, not the government. Fix it. Everyone's always wanting someone else to do their work for them. How about trying don't stuff food in their mouths every time they cry just to shut them up? Then sit around wondering why they eat like hogs. No sale here.
