View Full Version : My wee car died D:
After years of good service a wires gone in her engine and the cost to find and fix would be more than the car is worth, very sad times. So it's been a day of dandering around car showrooms and generally failing faint and 4 figure loans ^,^;
In the meantime I'm running about in a '97 box on wheels with additional features like 'the drivers door doesn't open' and 'the Windows can go down, but not up'

Hell, one of my first cars was a '72 Dodge Dart with a tree growing out of a huge rusted out hole in the trunk!! I paid an entire $20 for that sucker. Had a few other clunkers that were less than $100, or given to me, hand me down types.
This song reminds me of one of my older cars!! *NSFW*

Not being personal or anything, but how old was that thing?
Do you have any mechanical skills? Wiring can be tricky depending
on the make and model.
And replacing it with something that is obviously questionable (by your description)
many not be a wise choice. If you are strapped for cash, I'd say get out of the
showrooms and look at the lots where certified by dealer used ones are on display.
P.S. I'd get rid of that 'box on wheels' ASAP...just a money pit from the sound of it.

My Renault was a 2001, had it three years, and only paid £800 for her so really it owes me no money, I know a fair bit about cars and maintenance but for this I'd passed it on to a local mechanic, he said finding the cause of the problem would take an auto-spark a days labour and that would be several hundred £ atleast.

the wee thing I'm in now is just something we keep locked away incase anyone gets stuck like I just have, I'll maybe put some petrol money into it but that's it, and for showrooms - its second hand ones I'm looking around, nay brand new cars.

I cannot be sure of the 'days labor'....some of these newer diagnostic meters are amazingly quick!

The good thing about driving a dinosaur is....the insurance is dirt cheap ($45/month) and the inspection is only about $14.50 a year here in the states.
I'm holding onto my clunker (it was my mom's car but VERY well taken care of and still runs fine) for as long as I possibly can. I loathe having to pay/waste good money on car insurance that I never ever even use....while the rates go up ANYWAY consistently so that I can generously help pay for all of the idiots out there that DO have insurance claims.

No inspections in CA and OR, unless you are pulled over. I think it is a little better
than back East.

WTH? And I thought my rusted Mercury Comet was bad. I don't remember what year it was, but it was exactly the bright green color of a can of Comet cleanser. Someone's idea of a bad joke, I guess.
Found what looks to be a great wee car, numbers crunched and application for finance submitted, now for the unnervingly Long wait x:

So maybe I exaggerated. But there was a HUGE hole rusted out in one of the quarter panels AND overtaking a portion of the trunk. It sat for so long that weeds and bushes or whatever were growing out of these rusted areas!! And yet the sucker started right up!!
In fact, we used to take that thing around running over mailboxes and anything else we could to abuse it. Through water, over glass. I couldn't kill it. It started losing a little oil and I couldn't care less. Eventually there was like no oil in that car and that thing STILL ran forever!!

To be fair, the roads are a lot smaller in Europe. I've never been to Ireland but most of their stuff is on wagons and carts. And gas costs a fortune there. SO I ain't picking on Noir. I'd rather ride a horse though than scrunch into one of those little things.

It does. You couldn't drive our sh*t on European streets. Those streets were NOT built for trucks. I can't even imagine parking my truck there. Those are Roman roads from way back when. I'm still going for the horse.

LOL Enjoy, God bless and have your friends toss some coins on the back floor for good luck!! (and for burritos when drunk in the middle of the night in between paychecks)
Cheers Jim, most of the other cars I was looking at for my money were a lot older and worn looking, so got lucky that this landed my way (:

I got a Hyundai back in the day that looked like your car, it was a little black one. It was surprisingly fast for a 4 cylinder, and ran well the entire time I had it. I don't know the weather/sun and laws over there - but if me, get those windows tinted!! Then get some new wheels, or at least black hub caps. It will look like an entirely different car for very little, and keep you cooler too!

After years of good service a wires gone in her engine and the cost to find and fix would be more than the car is worth, very sad times....
You're looking at it the wrong way. Daily drivers (a car that you use for transportation daily) have a recurring cost to own and maintain. Just add up the financing, routine maintenance and fuel and you'll come up with an average monthly cost. For an econo-box, this will be about $300 or more per month, so I'll use that figure as an example.
Say that you need an expensive repair, like a transmission. $2000. And the market value of the car is $1000.
$2000/ $1000 = 2 is meaningless. $2000/ $300 per month = 7 months has meaning.
So you have to ask yourself, will this repair get me more than 7 months of transportation?
