A police officer in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia was shot to death last night (Australian time). He and his partner were at a house to execute (we don't "serve" warrants here, we execute them, funny term I know but it's what the law uses) them. It was just a bloody warrant for unpaid fines. The officer went around the back of the house when there was no answer from the front door (not a good move for reasons of safety and law) and the offender came out of the back door with a rifle and shot him in the chest. He was 33 yrs old. Really bloody sad.

The offender shot himself, he's critical in hospital.

That's interesting that it would get any publicity outside of Oz. Update, the bloke had a Luger pistol apparently and he topped himself, died in hospital. Guess what - no body armour, the Queensland Police doesn't supply personal body armour to its officers. I think they may have tactical body armour (Threat Level III) which they wear externally and have to put on when they know they're going into a dangerous situation but this was apparently a straightforward warrant job. Bloody shame.

The Queensland Police have announced an inquiry into it. It'll be the usual whitewash.

One point - the job here is nowhere near as dangerous as it is in some other places, but that's no reason for official or unofficial complacency.

I think killing anyone is a horrible thing, and EQUALLY as bad as killing a cop, because "we are all equal" as human beings, no innocent life loss is greater than another.

But I do know what you mean about how sickening it is when a cop is killed in the line of duty! :(

Cop killing is no worse than any other murder. I've never got the protect and serve thing. More like lets take a report after the incident has already occured and then serve you with a ticket to make the state/city/county some money.

Yea but the way I look at it is if they have the guts attack and or kill a cop they are to dangerous and desperate moreso then the average criminal.

But yesterday here in Reno,NV Some guy walked out of a downtown hotel and just started shooting all around him. He was shooting in the air when the cops arrived in less than 30 seconds. They shot and killed him. He refused to drop his weapon and moved in a threatening manner at an officer. Although I was downtown at the time also. I had my gun with me. (I have a ccw though) I was about a block from where it happened.

well thats why you buy your own armor if it isnt issued. Which I bought my own. I wear mine to work every day I dont care how hot it is outside. Yes it isnt full proof and can go in an area not covered but still.

But that ends up with you buying your own uniform, your own handgun, your own ammunition, etc. The employer here is responsible to properly equip the employee and for mine that includes body armour where it is reasonably required.

I remember some time ago watching some episodes of Cops and it featured a Sheriff's Dept somewhere in the South, can't think even of the State, NC comes to mind but I could be wrong. Anyway there's this breathless account of the Sheriff's Deputies stopping mules moving drugs from Fla up to the North-East. I was looking at their equipment, demeanour and the rest of it and thinking, something wrong with this picture. I'm pretty sure there was a big investigation for corruption and a few of them hit the slammer. Damn good thing too. I hate bent cops.

Police officers put themselves in dangerous situations that other people are busy running away from. Ya they can get annoying for stupid traffic stops. But, what would we do without them.

That after the casino shooting in Vegas and other Issues I heard one of our senators is trying to make it a law that all uniformed security in our state be armed. It would be about time they let us protect ourselves.
