View Full Version : Favourite Car you've owned? Next realistic dream car?

What do you say? What's the single favourite car you've owned - and still sorta wish you had? What's the next car you want to own - and realistically can?

My favourite car was probably my 93 Miata. One of the fastest cars I've been in (when wearing track tires). Plus - I have memories of the montana/idaho/eastern WA night sky and stars overhead as I motored through mountains and canyons and open high plains sorta terrain.

My next 'dream' car?

Half of me says spend $30k on a used 911T. The other half says spend $15k on an expedition rig that would be more sustainable and likely usable in my next stage of life.

I LOVE This van, as an example - and it's $8k. :)

That van looks like the one in Back to the Future, that the Lebanese guys were cruising trying to kill Marty in the mall parking lot! :)

I don't have a favorite care that I've owned, they all sucked. The closest was a 2001 Mustang piece of crap that looked cool. But my dream car, right now?

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Super Snake!

Hmmm... my '85 Fiero was a lot of fun to drive, but mechanically a nightmare to work on - which happened a lot with that damn thing. But the rear engine design made that baby corner like a champion and the chicks loved it - that was kind of my priority back then.

My '77 Camaro with the 327 with 202 double-humper heads was a beast. The T-Tops and spoilers, along with the TA-50s mounted on Cragar rims made it look awesome. I'd have to say that was my all time favorite... nothing compares to American muscle.

Big block 390 ci &335 hp, full exhaust, 4.10 rear, and tuned by Ronnie Clark. The only bad thing was it only came with a 3 speed as Ford didn't have a 4 speed that could take the power. And for you NT, I always have a T-top Camaro in the garage. :thumb:

If I could change it for any car it'd probably be something like a wee Fiat 500, or a Nissan Figaro.

I love Mustangs, but have never owned one. Yours makes me drool, especially knowing it's got a 390 lurking under the hood!

I wish I had surviving pics of my old rides, but I lost all my old-school pictures when I got divorced - they completely slipped my mind and I think those boxes got sent to the dump out of spite.

I guess you guys need small cars to fit the narrow streets over there, Noir, but small cars drive me nuts! I wouldn't mind taking a Cooper for a spin, though... I see a lot of those around up here and the owners rave about them. They have a pretty solid racing ancestry.

Funny thing about muscle cars...They really had low hp ratings by today's standards. The 77 T/A 6.6? About 220hp as-measured today. Out of a 6.6.
Even the 1970s BOSS 302s? About 250hp net.

:)

Those real numbers don't tarnish shit about how awesome those cars were, however.

Yeah, it's insane that they're getting 500 HP out of a V6 these days.

Still... the roar of a 302 at WOT always brings a smile to my face!

My favorite car is a bike (if that counts)

99 Wide Glide

http://www.debatepolicy.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8709&stc=1

But just in case that doesn't work I have had a couple. My favorite vehicle that comes to mind is either the 1970 Chevy 3/4 ton P/U I had, it was lifted the motor worked and was just all around a bad truck.

Or I had a 73 Camaro, it was puke green (but I had big plans of a paint job) this car was a work in progress, had the motor sitting in a stand to put in it when my wife decided to just bump a telephone pole with it, yea that just a little bump pushed the entire r/s back, the door wouldn't open , hood was mkssed up, yea I would love to scene if she had smacked the pole.

Oh, yes. The 383s were amazing!

A friend of mine had a '67 or '68 Dodge pickup with one. The truck was turquoise and uglier than sin and he had a huge white camper shell mounted on it. It had the shift selector on the dash and a monster steering wheel with no power steering. Turning the front wheels in a parking lot was one hell of a workout.

3 gas tanks holding 80 gallons because it got 8 MPG - whether you were pulling a couple tons on a trailer or running empty. It finally threw a rod coming back from Talkeetna one day back in '95 or so... it had over 350,000 on her.

Definitely ....it was two white Trans Ams.

The first one I had was white with the turquoise phoenix decal on the hood. It was paid for and my damned husband then traded it in, without my consent or approval, on a NEW one which I was unable to pay for after the divorce, so I lost it. Would have had a damned fine auto if he hadn't done that (quite deliberately). Ergo, why he's an "ex".

Bought me another white TA in '89 that had T-tops. I loved taking those tops off and driving to Galveston on the weekends. Ahh....that was 'the life'. Beach, sports car, smooth jazz....wonderful.

Favorite car ever owned: 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood . It wasn't very useful to drive at 8 MPG and constant repairs. But boy do they look cool. Here is an example:

Jim thinks he can break his wife's crock pot and get away with it and somebody says "favorite car" so his goofy ass brother posts a pic of a bike. In 1963 Dad purchased a TriVan. It was the most attention getting vehicle ever as it was a 3 wheeled sort of pickup with a single rear wheel drive. Every time it was on the road it was funny to see people suddenly stop what they were doing to bend over to see under this thing when they noticed only 3 wheels when it when by. Park it and a crowd was always around it with half on their knees studying it and had a million questions.

Yeah since my mother won't buy anything but Toyota that's what I want her to buy. Can't keep driving her damn Prius in snow and ice.

You fit in a Prius? My knees already hurt just thinking about it. I hate cars. It's like I have to low crawl to get in. They got nothing on planes though. Those damned buses with wings they have now? I don't fit. I have to sit at a 45 degree angle the whole flight because of my shoulders. And they're talking a bout making them smaller. WTF? Get me a space in cargo, or what?

I love my truck. GMC 2500 HD longbed with a Rhino liner and some custom wheels. Fire engine red. :)

Toyota's are cool. She can get the same thing in a Kia for about $10k less. Had a Toyota 4x4 once. I loved it. I only felt a slight twinge of guilt owning it because they made better vehicles. My ex drove a Nissan and it was great until she took off. Leave it HER to kill a Jap car.

I've had my truck since 01. Change the oil and the tires and have had ZERO problems otherwise. Well, other than every Mexican in San Antonio wanted to break into the damned thing. Before this one, I averaged about 3 years per vehicle for over 20 years. I finally keep one and everyone wants to destroy the damned thing. You'd think it was invisible the way people will jerk out in front of me in their little rice burners. It's like, dude, you fit UNDER my bumper and what part of 3/4 ton flaming-ass fire engine red did you miss? And the morons don't realize that "TRUCK" means if I slam on the brakes I'm STILL running over your ass.

Gas. Got a 10-bolt diff. Everything on this truck heavy duty. That was their selling point. Got the 6.0 litre V-8. I also swapped out the chip so it doesn't cut out at 90mph. I ain't going to win any drag races but you ain't running me down on the highway.

Smh.

Besides, I have a strong dislike for the UAW ever since they tried to kill me so if it comes to a tie, non-UAW wins.

Although the other trucks weren't even close when I was test driving anyway. I test drove the Toyota first. It was obvious that they considered the drivers comfort and convenience in the design. The Ford and Chevy you could tell that there was no driver convenience intended. I drove and rode in a lot of company trucks that were Ford and Chevy, they were rattle traps after a few miles.

LOL, come to think of it that might not say a lot about his judgement though. I typically get along better with Marines than the other branches of those who fought and served. :salute:

My dad got me in a construction union when I was 17. By the time I was a journeyman Millwright I was married and trapped by the income/benefits. I spent 24 years as a union Millwright. I always figured that if the customer was paying more for me because I was union they deserved more from me. I was also always glad that there was a non-union element out there to keep us honest. I ran my crews and myself as craftsmen. We perform our work faster, cleaner and do a better job than any competition. We don't skip or miss the little things.

Well, let me explain this for you:

There wasn't enough work for all the union members, so some of them were unemployed, and drawing unemployment from the State funds. Then, the union took in some more members and put them to work, displacing some into the unemployment lines.

What about putting it back together? That's my weakness in taking a car apart: Too impatient to mark and label all the parts I remove. Then of course you mix in parts from other vehicles. Take apart a 1959, buy some guy's leftover parts from a 1960 restoration and toss them all in the same spot.

You get one pre-80s I can put it back together. I's be willing to bet glock, jeff and a few others could too. And you NEVER restore using swap-off parts if you can help it. Personally,I'd fabricated one before I's use a swap-off. But that's just me.

I've bought cars based on my lifestyle at the time. Probably my most favorite was my '85 TBird. I bought that about a year after graduating college and it was my first new car. I ordered it with the options that I needed to make it a drivers car. No fluff whatsoever, not even a radio. Roll-up windows. Just the options that were important to me at the time: 5.0 V8, traction-lok axle, quad shock suspension, heavy duty front and rear sway bars, cruise control and heated seats. This was the third year of the 9th generation TBird, based on the Fox chassis used in the Mustang and mid sized Fords at the time, so modifications could be done using Mustang parts. With the right tires and tweaking the front end camber it did very well on my Track Time outings at Watkins Glen, in spite of only having 150 HP and top speed limited by the AOD transmission, which forced a downshift to 3rd just under 100 mph.

I had to get rid of it in '98 when I moved to NC because it was rusting out. I replaced it with a '98 Mustang GT.

My '12 Jeep Grand Cherokee is my 2nd favorite because of the luxury features, incredible capabilities and interior. It has the Overland package with 4WD, selectable modes for various terrain, adjustable air suspension. I chose the V6 engine, Chrysler's Pentastar with DOHC, 4 valve, twin VVT making 290 HP and a huge table-flat torque range. It's the same chassis as the similar sized Mercedes but at least $20K less. I just hit 100k miles on it and will probably keep it for a very long time.

Realistic dream car? There is no "perfect" car because great cars are designed for a specific need. So along with the Jeep I'd like to have a sports car or a muscle car. Right now I have a '64 TBird that I just completed and that fits my muscle car need. I also have a '74 Fiat Spider which is about as true a sports car per my definition: two seats, top down, bare bones, built for the twisty roads.

Probably the most attainable dream car today in the 2016 model year is the Mustang GT350.

Mine was not lifted. With the kind of traction I had, it made
no sense to raise the center of gravity on it.

I could traverse slippery clay soil at angles where a lifted one
would roll. Used to go into the Klamath River gorge outside

I'm actually a good driver. He wanted me to beat up on it more than that, so he could show his car off, but I didn't want to take chances on a ticket or crashing. But damn, it's not often that I can drive a car that is literally almost too fast to handle. I don't like a car like that in a single or double lane, unless driving normally. :)

I spent a good part of my childhood in the back of a station wagon, stuck in traffic jams in and around metro Boston, no air conditioning. I left as soon as I could. I went to college in western Mass and that was great. I had several USGS maps pieced together on my dorm room wall, and knew the roads like the back of my hand, so every Sunday I'd get on the motorcycle and ride a hundred miles or more on gently curving two lane roads with no traffic.

After graduation I tried to get a job in that area but there was literally nothing. The only job offer I received was at minimum wage! With an engineering degree! I took a job in Hartford Ct where the bucks were big but traffic was a complete nightmare. I quit after a year.

My next gig was in Upstate NY and that was nice- no traffic. The roads sucked though for a motorcycle because they were too straight! Great for the car I had back then though, an '85 TBird, basically a Mustang with a nicer looking body, 4" longer. I would embarrass the hell out of guys in their Saabs and ricers, destroying them on hill climbs and on-ramps.

That whole DC area sucks, and not just because of the traffic. The huge, bloated FedCo has caused a housing and building boom that has lasted decades. I'd love to see what would happen if FedCo was strictly held to its Constitutional mandate. It would look like Detroit!

Last time I was there was for a conference that my wife was attending. I had nothing to do for three days, and for one of them, I decided to drive through DC in two directions, then around it. I had no schedule so didn't feel "penned in" with the traffic. I saw a lot of strange things.

The other two day I used the subway system. That's really the only way to get anywhere if you have to park.

Your little pdf flies in the face of perhaps hundreds of companies successfully lifting trucks for probably 70 years.

You don't drive through the District. I would always use a bicycle. That way you can actually stop and look at something. (just don't leave your bike alone)

Lifting, installing huge tires, and making more dangerous, as the study confirms.

A 6" lift kit and truck tires on a Scout. MyLord, this says a LOT about you, modifying a nice little truck like that to make it stupid looking and dangerous. Are you trying to make up for something?

Just curious, are you in the habit of walking up to a bouncer at a bar and giving him a titty twister? Do you then stand on the sidewalk out front and cry foul, nursing your new roadrash?

I'm curious too. On my own behalf. Glock likes to pick out someone on the staff and go after them. Used to be me. Now it's Darin. SO the big, long, drawn-out question for me is "Why?". Nothing's being proven and you just get banned. I fail to see the purpose to suicide, be it real or on a board.

"Buddy" is the bouncer at a bar that I frequent, and since he's not a douche, no I don't twist his titties. Now MyLord, OTOH, IS a douche.

Shows how stupid you are to make a stupid comment like that :-)

Because THIS is "dangerous" you stupid cun*?

33" tires and probably a 6" lift on the same model/year as mine...

You mist love embarassing yourself.

Nice looking Scout; although I disargee with lifting one. Mine was still high enough

When you were being a douche, especially abusing your authority, then I picked on you. :buttkick:

I never abused my authority. It's one of my pet peeves. What I didn't do was cater. I also didn't know a lot of things I know now from just being a member. Nobody tells you anything when you're on top. I was the proverbial "last to know" about a lot of crap including the duplicity of half my mods.

Try looking at the other side of coin. I got up and showered and shaved at 5AM and made my lunch and coffee for the wife and her breakfast, and I'd have about 20 minutes to log on and what do I get? PMs of people whining and bitching about how they were being mistreated. I didn't get to read any posts. Are you kidding? Then after a 10 hour day as an electrician I could come home, work out and I had maybe an hour or two so I could read the rest of the PMs from people whining and bitching.

And I'm not crying. I was given the responsibility and I took it. Just how I'm built. I'm a complete lone wolf. Here SSgt, you're now the Company Gunny. Oh gee fucking thanks. You going to bend me over in the shower while you're at it?

Point is, and I'm speaking solely from a staff POV, these guys get no breaks. You got a personal issue, your business. As staff members, they don't get to have any fun. I got to where I forgot why I was even a member. Can't say anything to people you want to, have to be careful what you post or you get called everything from NAZI to whatever. Can't tell someone to just STFU. Unprofessional. I just didn't give a fuck in the end.

I WILL give you one thing ... at least you always came at me straight up and in my face unlike the backdoor politics I had no clue what was going on. I hate that shit and I honestly didn't know it was going on. If I had, there'd have been a whole different staff. Trust me.

What YOU do though is attack staff members and you don't differentiate between the staff member and the poster. And you always drag their position into the fray. You've been around almost as long as I have. SO have most of the people here. I was never being a douche. I took control of a board with about 10 active posters and 30 posts a day -- half of them mine. When it got to 3k posts a day I'd have had to had been paid to read every single line. I wouldn't have been able to go to work. I made a lot more money at work.

About time you got off your attack the staff kick. It's never worked and never going to. And trust me, you have a problem with Darin or NT and keep it personal, I got diapers to change. Just lay off the staff crap.

Except for jimnyc. That fucker's had the board jacked up for 2 days. This is my f*cking entertainment f*cker. Get your damned sh*t together. :slap:

We need to take up a collection. Apparently in the Jim and Jeff family, reading and/or comprehension is a hard thing. Jim thinks he can break his wife's crock pot and get away with it and somebody says "favorite car" so his goofy ass brother posts a pic of a bike. I personally think it has to do with all their names starting with a "J". I could be wrong though.
A collection works for me, then I can put another bike together for the car colum
